Trump Mobile T1 Review: 9 Months Late, No Longer Made in the USA

NBC News has published the first independent review of the Trump Mobile T1 smartphone, revealing that the device arrived nine months after its originally promised delivery date and is no longer marketed as “Made in the USA” — a central claim when the phone was first announced in June 2025. According to NBC News, the review unit was sent to media outlets this week, but consumer units have still not shipped to any of the approximately 590,000 customers who placed $100 deposits.

The Promise vs. Reality

When Trump Mobile launched at Trump Tower on June 16, 2025, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump promoted the T1 as a “sleek, gold smartphone engineered for performance” that would be “proudly designed and built in the United States.” The phone was priced at $499 with a promised delivery of August or September 2025. Customers were asked to put down a $100 deposit to secure their device.

However, just nine days after launch, the Trump Mobile website quietly removed all “Made in the USA” language, replacing it with vague phrases like “American-Proud Design” and “Premium Performance. Proudly American,” as Business Today reported at the time. The phone’s advertised screen size was reduced from 6.78 inches to 6.25 inches, and the previously touted 12GB of RAM was removed from the specifications entirely.

A Timeline of Broken Promises

The delivery timeline for the T1 has shifted repeatedly. Originally slated for September 2025, the date moved to “later this year,” then to Q1 2026, and eventually disappeared from the website entirely. In April 2026, Trump Mobile updated its terms of service to state that the $100 deposit is “not a pre-order” but “a conditional opportunity if Trump Mobile later elects, in its sole discretion, to offer the Device for sale,” according to Popular Information. Estimated ship dates are now described as “non-binding estimates only.”

Trump Mobile has collected approximately $59 million in deposits from roughly 590,000 customers — effectively an interest-free loan — without shipping a single consumer unit, as AppleInsider reported.

Quality and Manufacturing Concerns

The NBC News review raises serious questions about the phone’s quality. The device, which comes pre-loaded with Truth Social and bears an American flag on the back, has “Trump” branding in four places out of the box. But the phone is no longer being marketed as manufactured in the United States — a promise that industry experts had always considered highly improbable.

The only phone currently assembled in the United States, the Liberty Phone from Purism, costs $2,000 and has specifications comparable to devices from a decade ago. Analysts estimate that a truly US-made smartphone would cost upwards of $3,000 due to the lack of domestic supply chains.

The Licensing Model and Conflicts of Interest

Trump Mobile is operated by T1 Mobile LLC under a limited license agreement with the Trump Organization. A disclaimer on the Trump Mobile website states that the Trump Organization does not design, manufacture, or sell the products — a standard brand licensing arrangement that allows the Trump family to earn revenue without bearing direct liability.

The venture also faces potential conflict of interest concerns. Trump Mobile operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on T-Mobile’s network, meaning T-Mobile must review and approve any devices before they can be deployed. As The Verge has noted, T-Mobile is regulated by the Trump administration, creating a situation where a company seeking government approval must also approve a device benefiting the President’s family business.

Customer Service Issues

Beyond the delays, customers have reported troubling experiences. A 404 Media reporter who pre-ordered the phone was charged multiple unexplained fees. A Reuters reporter who called the customer service line was greeted with “Omega Auto Care, how can I help you?” — suggesting the call center may have been repurposed from an auto warranty company.

What’s Next

As of May 19, 2026, no consumer units have shipped. Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have asked the FTC to investigate Trump Mobile for alleged “bait-and-switch tactics” and false advertising over the “Made in the USA” claim, but the FTC has not confirmed an investigation. The T1 phone still requires T-Mobile certification before it can be deployed on the network, and Trump Mobile’s website currently provides no estimated release date.

For the 590,000 customers who placed deposits, the question remains: will they ever receive a phone, or will they be left with an expensive lesson in the perils of pre-ordering from a politically branded venture?
