8th Western China Fair Opens May 21 in Chongqing
The 8th Western China International Fair (West China Fair) will open on May 21 in Chongqing, bringing together nearly 1,400 enterprises from 50 countries and regions under the theme “New West, New Manufacturing, New Services.” Running through May 24, the event serves as a key platform for investment promotion and trade cooperation in western China, with the United Kingdom as Guest of Honor Country, Sichuan Province as Permanent Guest Province, and South Korea’s Gyeonggi Province as Guest City.
A Platform for Global Engagement
The fair, officially known as the China Western International Investment and Trade Fair, features four major themed exhibition zones spanning up to 150,000 square meters, according to CCTV News. These include a Comprehensive Image Zone showcasing AI, low-altitude economy technologies, and advanced materials; a Productive Services Zone — established for the first time as an independent area — covering low-carbon environmental protection, modern logistics, and financial services; an Industrial Integration Development Zone; and an International and Regional Cooperation Zone featuring products from over 30 countries.
Zhang Yongwu, Director of the Chongqing Municipal Commerce Commission and head of the fair’s organizing committee, stated that the event is “closely aligned with the 15th Five-Year Plan goals, focusing on four dimensions — achievement display, investment negotiation, open exchange, and consumption promotion — to create a high-level economic and trade event that demonstrates political commitment, practical results, and market- and people-oriented benefits,” as Xinhua reported.
UK Takes Center Stage as Guest of Honor
The United Kingdom’s participation as Guest of Honor Country underscores deepening bilateral trade ties. British Trade Envoy to China Neil? (Ni Lesi) is leading a delegation of over 60 institutions and enterprises comprising more than 100 representatives, covering advanced manufacturing, green infrastructure, healthcare, technology, education, and professional services.
The UK National Pavilion, spanning over 600 square meters, features a futuristic design with “light tracks” symbolizing innovation and speed, with 35 British companies showcasing products. Key participants include McLaren, GSK, HSBC, Standard Chartered, and IHG, alongside organizations such as the China-Britain Business Council and UK Export Finance.
According to Xinhua’s coverage, Ni Lesi emphasized that “the UK is currently one of Europe’s largest investors in China” and that the fair will “highlight the importance of UK-China economic and trade relations and build an efficient matchmaking platform for enterprises from both countries.” Bilateral trade between Chongqing and the UK reached 12.99 billion RMB in 2025, up 25.7% year-on-year, with Q1 2026 trade reaching 2.96 billion RMB, a 12.4% increase.
British Consul-General in Chongqing Li Yao noted that over 110 British enterprises have invested in Chongqing, including Jardine Matheson, one of the largest foreign investors in the city.
Gyeonggi Province: A Semiconductor Powerhouse
South Korea’s Gyeonggi Province, home to Samsung, SK Hynix, LG, and Hyundai Motor headquarters and R&D centers, brings its semiconductor expertise as Guest City. The province’s connection with Chongqing dates to 2013, when SK Hynix established its largest overseas packaging and testing base in the city.
As the Chongqing government reported, cooperation has deepened significantly: the Gyeonggi Economic Science Promotion Agency established a Chongqing representative office in 2017, inaugurated its China Innovation Center in Liangjiang New Area in 2024 — the first and only such center in China — and two batches of 20 Korean youth completed exchange training in Chongqing in 2025. Bilateral trade between Chongqing and South Korea reached 45.7 billion RMB in 2025, with Q1 2026 trade surging 69.74% year-on-year to 14.8 billion RMB.
Sichuan: From Guest to Permanent Partner
Sichuan Province, which has participated as a guest province since the second edition and became “Permanent Guest Province” at the 7th fair, is presenting a 520-square-meter pavilion themed “Tianfu Smart Manufacturing · Open Core.” Twenty-six Sichuan enterprises are showcasing nearly 100 exhibits, including Dongfang Electric clean energy equipment models, Qitan Technology gene sequencing devices, and Tianao Electronics Beidou satellite terminals.
According to Xinhua, the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle — a key national strategy — has driven significant integration, with 26 rail, highway, and waterway connections between the two regions, 28 jointly established national key laboratories, and 27,000 high-tech enterprises. The Chengdu-Chongqing Central High-Speed Rail, spanning 292 kilometers at 350 km/h, will reduce travel time between the two cities to under 50 minutes upon completion.
Global Procurement and Matchmaking
The fair has upgraded its global procurement mechanism, focusing on six areas: intelligent connected new energy vehicles, modern logistics, big health, new energy, food and agricultural processing, and enterprise globalization. Over 20 countries and regions have been invited, with first-time coverage of Belt and Road emerging markets including Ghana, Kyrgyzstan, and Zimbabwe.
As Xinhua detailed, the fair will host a New Silk Road Countries Economic and Trade Matchmaking event involving 12 countries including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, alongside multinational corporation tours, a Vietnam-China Trade and Investment Promotion Conference, and the 3rd Cross-border High-quality Development Forum.
Public Engagement and Consumer Events
The fair also aims to boost consumer spending through public events, including a new energy vehicle carnival featuring nearly 20 mainstream auto brands, a “Chongqing Taste 360 Bowls” food carnival, and an International Sister Cities Food Culture Carnival. The International and Regional Cooperation Zone will allow visitors to purchase products from over 30 countries and regions, while a “Renewal Consumption Week” offers trade-in policies and tax invoice incentives.
Looking Ahead
The 8th West China Fair represents a significant milestone in China’s Western Development Strategy, emphasizing “new quality productive forces” — a shift toward high-tech, innovation-driven growth. With the UK’s prominent participation, deepening semiconductor cooperation with South Korea, and the continued integration of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, the fair underscores western China’s growing role as a gateway for international trade and investment. Nearly 40 events over four days will determine the concrete outcomes and investment deals that emerge from this year’s gathering.
