Trump Mobile T1 Phone Arrives 9 Months Late, No Longer Made in USA

After a nine-month delay that left nearly 600,000 deposit holders waiting, the Trump Mobile T1 phone has finally begun shipping — but the device that arrived bears little resemblance to what was originally promised. According to NBC News, which received one of the first review units, the $499 handset is no longer marketed as “Made in the USA,” has been identified as a rebranded Taiwanese smartphone, and features an American flag design with only 11 stripes instead of the correct 13.

Context: A Troubled Launch

The T1 phone was unveiled in June 2025 at Trump Tower by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, with promises of an August 2025 release and a fully American-made product. Customers were asked to pay a $100 refundable deposit to secure their place in line. What followed was a series of missed deadlines, shifting marketing language, and growing skepticism from technology analysts.

By late June 2025 — just days after the announcement — Trump Mobile quietly removed “Made in the USA” from its website, replacing it with “brought to life right here in the USA.” The company later updated the phrasing to “designed with American values in mind,” and the packaging that arrived with review units now reads “Proudly Assembled in USA.”

What the Review Found

NBC News business correspondent Brian Cheung and journalist Maya Huter conducted the hands-on review, revealing that the T1’s specifications match the HTC U24 Pro exactly — a mid-range Taiwanese phone launched in 2024. The device features a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, a 6.8-inch OLED screen, and 512GB of storage. Shahram Mokhtari, an engineer at repair firm iFixit, told NBC News the two devices are “physically very similar.”

The Independent reported that tech experts confirmed the phone appears to be a rebranded HTC U-24 Pro. CNN separately noted the T1 closely resembles the T-Mobile REVVL 7 Pro 5G, a Chinese-made smartphone available at Walmart for $127.99 — roughly what customers paid as a deposit alone.

The Flag Design Error

Perhaps the most visible flaw is the American flag emblazoned on the phone’s rear casing. The design features only 11 red and white stripes instead of the 13 that represent the original colonies. Some promotional videos posted by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. showed as few as nine stripes in certain shots.

Dominic Preston of The Verge wrote that the shifting stripe count is “almost certainly” the result of AI-generated imagery rather than footage of a real device. “The 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies that broke away from British rule to fight for independence, so you probably shouldn’t just lop two of them off,” Preston noted.

Consumer Concerns and Deposits

Reports indicate approximately 590,000 people paid $100 deposits, representing an estimated $59 million in collected funds. On April 6, 2026, Trump Mobile updated its pre-order terms to state that a deposit “does not guarantee that a Device will be produced or made available for purchase” and provides only a “conditional opportunity” to buy. According to Snopes, the terms do allow customers to request refunds, and the company would issue refunds if it decides not to sell the device.

Regulatory and Political Dimensions

In January 2026, Senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic lawmakers asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Trump Mobile over potentially misleading marketing and whether the original “Made in the USA” claims amounted to false advertising. The FTC has not confirmed any investigation.

Trump Mobile CEO Pat O’Brien defended the phone to USA Today, saying the delays “were worth it in our minds as we are delivering an amazing product.” He stated that components would be “primarily manufactured in America,” though technology analysts have found no evidence supporting this claim.

Analysis: Marketing vs. Reality

The T1 phone contradicts nearly every original marketing promise. It is not made in the USA, features an incorrect flag design, uses two-year-old technology sold at a premium price, and arrived months late with no accountability for the delays. The HTC U24 Pro received a 2.5/5 star rating from Tech Advisor at its 2024 launch, described as “hard to recommend” even then.

Android Authority noted that for $499, consumers could purchase significantly more capable modern smartphones. The monthly service plan costs $47.45 — a nod to Trump being the 47th president — and the phone comes pre-loaded with Truth Social.

What’s Next

Trump Mobile CEO Pat O’Brien said fulfilling all orders would take “several weeks.” The White House has declined to confirm whether President Trump uses the device himself. For the roughly 590,000 deposit holders, the question remains whether they will receive the phone they were promised — or whether the T1 will be remembered as a cautionary tale in the intersection of branding, politics, and consumer technology.
