Doug McCain, Eldest Son of John McCain, Dies Suddenly at 66

Douglas “Doug” Shepp McCain, the eldest adopted son of the late U.S. Senator John McCain, died suddenly on May 20, 2026, at the age of 66. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, and the McCain family has requested privacy during this difficult time, according to Fox News.

A Life of Service

Born on October 4, 1959, in Pensacola, Florida, Doug McCain grew up in Jacksonville, where he excelled in surfing, baseball, and soccer. He graduated from Jacksonville Episcopal High School in 1977 before attending the University of Virginia, where he majored in Systems Engineering, joined the SAE fraternity, participated in Navy ROTC, and met his future wife, Ashley Jardine.

After graduating in 1982, McCain followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the U.S. Navy, where he spent six years flying A-6 Intruder attack aircraft. He later transitioned to commercial aviation, building a long career with American Airlines and eventually becoming a captain — a role his family said he “truly loved.”

Family Legacy

Doug McCain was adopted by John McCain in 1966, one year after the future senator married Carol Shepp McCain. John McCain, a Navy aviator who was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five and a half years, later served as a U.S. Senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018 and was the Republican presidential nominee in 2008.

Despite being the eldest son of one of America’s most prominent political figures, Doug McCain largely stayed out of the political spotlight, focusing instead on his military and aviation careers. When asked about his father’s legacy, he told a Norfolk, Virginia, NBC affiliate that it was “to inspire people, to work for a cause greater than their own, and to recognize that America is an exceptional country, and that we are the world’s greatest hope for democracy.”

Family Statements

Meghan McCain, Doug’s stepsister and former co-host of “The View,” announced the news on X (formerly Twitter) on May 24. “I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing,” she wrote. “He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together.” Her full statement can be read on X.

The McCain Institute also extended its condolences. “We extend our condolences to the McCain family following the passing of Douglas ‘Doug’ Shepp McCain, the eldest son of John McCain,” the institute wrote on X. “A Navy pilot like his father, Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain’s Institute, campaigns & Senate staff.”

A Life Remembered

According to his official obituary, Doug McCain was remembered for his sharp wit and generous spirit. “Doug could always be counted on to tell you what he knew and, more often than not, explain why he was right,” the obituary read. “He secretly loved his ‘World Book’ nickname and hated that Google eventually put him out of business. He enjoyed golf and was very proud to hold the McCain family record of three holes-in-one.”

The obituary continued: “He was a loyal friend to many and cherished each and every friendship. He was a devoted son, a loving father to Caroline and Shepp, and most recently found great joy in being Teddy’s grandfather.”

Doug McCain is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ashley Jardine McCain; daughter Caroline McCain Hendrickson and son-in-law Emily of Washington, D.C.; son Douglas Shepp McCain Jr., daughter-in-law Ellie, and grandson Teddy of New York City. He is also survived by his mother, Carol Shepp McCain; brother Andy McCain; sister Sidney McCain; stepmother Cindy McCain; and stepsiblings Meghan, Jack, Jimmy, and Bridget McCain.

Memorial

A Family’s Recent Challenges

Doug McCain’s death comes during a difficult period for the McCain family. Cindy McCain, Doug’s stepmother, suffered a mild stroke in October 2025 and stepped down as head of the UN World Food Programme in February 2026 to focus on her health. The family continues to mourn the loss of Senator John McCain, who died of glioblastoma in August 2018.

As the McCain family gathers to remember Doug, those who knew him recall a man of loyalty, humor, and quiet service — a patriot who, like his famous father, dedicated his life to serving his country and loving his family.
