American Sniper Widow Taya Kyle Fires Back After Democrat Candidate Trashes Late Husband

Taya Kyle, the widow of decorated U.S. Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, forcefully defended her late husband on Sunday after Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner made disparaging comments suggesting Kyle shot innocent civilians to inflate his confirmed kill count. Appearing on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing,” Kyle called Platner’s remarks “cowardly” and a “cheap political trick” designed to attach his name to a national hero, as Fox News reported.

The Controversy

Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and the Democratic frontrunner in Maine’s Senate race against incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins, made the comments during a May 2024 episode of the “Green Beret Chronicle Show” podcast. In the interview, Platner suggested that Chris Kyle’s record of 160 confirmed kills — the highest of any U.S. military sniper — was inflated because Kyle allegedly fired indiscriminately at civilians.

“His stories about how many people he was shooting certainly tracked with the behavior I witnessed, and people I knew witnessed down at the Gov Center, which is it’s relatively easy to get high numbers like that if you’re a little less discriminating your fire than say a more professional unit would be,” Platner said on the podcast.

Taya Kyle’s Response

Speaking on Fox News, Taya Kyle did not hold back. “Nothing says, I want attention more than disparaging a national hero who’s also dead,” she said. She accused Platner of employing a “cheap political trick” to gain notoriety by attacking someone who is “beloved” by the American public.

“It is cowardly, it’s lowbrow to lie about somebody else, and it distracts from what you’ve probably said,” Kyle added. “That’s working for him to get that notoriety, but to me, it shows a total inability to lead with character. For me he would be out of the running immediately.”

Broader Pattern of Controversy

The Chris Kyle comments are just the latest in a series of controversies that have dogged Platner’s campaign. Previously resurfaced Reddit posts show Platner mocking a wounded U.S. soldier who was shot by Taliban fighters, writing: “Dumb motherf----- didn’t deserve to live.” Robert O’Neill, the Navy SEAL credited with killing Osama bin Laden, condemned Platner over those remarks, calling them “completely barbaric” and saying Platner is not “fit” for the Senate, as Fox News reported.

Platner has also faced scrutiny over a tattoo resembling the Nazi SS Totenkopf symbol, posts praising Hamas and criticizing American warfighters, and comments calling himself a “communist” while advocating political violence. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has highlighted these controversies, noting that Platner’s comments about Chris Kyle came during Memorial Day weekend — a time of heightened patriotism and remembrance.

The Maine Senate Race

Platner is challenging three-term incumbent Sen. Susan Collins in what has become one of the most closely watched Senate races of the 2026 midterm cycle. After Maine Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign in April 2026, Platner became the presumptive Democratic nominee. He has been endorsed by prominent progressives including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Despite the controversies, Platner has attributed his past online activity to struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder from his military service. O’Neill, however, rejected that explanation, telling Fox News Digital that PTSD is no excuse for such “vile hatred.”

Analysis and Implications

The timing of the controversy — erupting during Memorial Day weekend — amplifies its political impact. Chris Kyle is revered across much of the political spectrum as a symbol of American military sacrifice, and attacking his legacy risks alienating veteran and moderate voters in a state where military service is deeply respected.

For Platner, the cumulative weight of his controversies presents a significant challenge. While his progressive populism has energized the Democratic base, the repeated revelations about his past statements threaten to define his candidacy in a way that could prove decisive in a general election against Collins, a skilled incumbent with a history of winning crossover support.

What’s Next

Platner has not issued a direct apology to the Kyle family for his 2024 comments. As the controversy continues to unfold, the question remains whether Democratic leaders will maintain their support or begin to distance themselves from a candidate whose past statements continue to generate negative headlines at critical moments in the campaign cycle.
