FN Browning Acquires British Precision Rifle Maker AI
Belgian state-owned arms manufacturer FN Browning Group has entered into a strategic acquisition agreement to acquire Accuracy International, the renowned British precision bolt-action rifle manufacturer based in Portsmouth, UK. The deal, announced on May 28, 2026, marks a significant consolidation in the European defence industry and strengthens FN Browning’s position in the high-end firearms sector.
A Strategic Combination
The acquisition brings together two highly complementary players. Accuracy International, founded in 1978 and formally established in 1980, is internationally recognised as a benchmark in precision bolt-action and extreme long-range rifle systems. The company is famous for its iconic Arctic Warfare design, adopted by the British Army as the L96A1 sniper rifle in 1984, as well as the AWM and AXMC platforms. According to the FN Herstal official press release, Accuracy International has served armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and sports shooters in over 50 countries in the last five years.
Julien Compère, CEO of FN Browning Group, described the rationale behind the deal: “Accuracy International brings a unique and highly specialised expertise in precision rifle systems that perfectly complements our defence and security solutions as well as our hunting and sports shooting offerings. This transaction also directly contributes to the UK’s strategic autonomy in defence and reflects our long-term commitment to the United Kingdom.”
Strengthening UK Sovereign Defence Capabilities
The acquisition carries particular strategic weight in the context of UK defence policy. Together, FN UK and Accuracy International are the UK’s only established manufacturers of machine guns and precision rifles for the British armed forces. The UK Ministry of Defence is planning a major overhaul of its small arms inventory, with procurements of new service rifles, machine guns, and precision rifles planned into the 2030s, including the “Project Grayburn” initiative to replace the SA80 service rifle.
Colonel Will Waugh, Dismounted Close Combat Team Leader at the UK Ministry of Defence, welcomed the deal: “The MoD has a long history of working with both FN and Accuracy International with some of our most important small arms capabilities being procured from both companies. The joining of these companies is great news for the MoD and gives us continued access to cutting edge capabilities.”
Michelle Cantoni, CEO of FN UK, emphasised the industrial implications: “By combining FN UK’s industrial capabilities with Accuracy International’s expertise, this acquisition strengthens the UK’s sovereign defence industrial base and reinforces our commitment to delivering world-class equipment to the British Armed Forces.”
Preserving Brand Identity and Engineering Excellence
Under the terms of the agreement, Accuracy International will continue to operate under its own brand, preserving its engineering culture and its manufacturing bases in both the UK and the United States. Tom Irwin, Director of Accuracy International, noted: “Joining FN Browning Group represents a strong strategic opportunity for Accuracy International. We share the same culture of engineering excellence, performance and dependability. This agreement enables us to preserve what defines Accuracy International while benefiting from the scale, global footprint and long-standing institutional relationships of FN Browning Group.”
The deal also creates a transatlantic precision platform, combining Accuracy International’s US operations with FN Browning Group’s existing industrial footprint across Europe, the UK, and the United States. As The Firearm Blog noted, this strategic move provides investment for Accuracy International and adds a key missing component to FN’s portfolio, as more small arms companies shift to offer a “complete package” of design and manufacturing capabilities.
Broader Industry Context
The acquisition follows FN Browning’s 2025 purchase of French munitions group Sofisport and reflects a broader trend of consolidation in the European defence industry. FN Browning Group, whose sole shareholder is the Walloon Region of Belgium, employs over 4,000 people across nine NATO countries and reported record profits in 2024.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal remains subject to customary regulatory approvals, and the timeline for completion has not been specified. FN Browning Group was advised by Stephens (M&A), Jones Day (legal), and PwC (financial and tax), while Accuracy International was advised by Oaklins S&W (M&A) and Trethowans (legal).
What’s Next
The acquisition positions FN Browning Group as the dominant domestic supplier for upcoming UK small arms procurement programs. With major decisions on new service rifles, machine guns, and precision rifles expected in the coming years, the combined FN UK and Accuracy International entity is uniquely placed to compete for these contracts. The deal also opens new export opportunities for Accuracy International through FN Browning Group’s global network, while reinforcing the UK’s sovereign capability to design, develop, and sustain critical small arms capabilities onshore.
