Springsteen and Morello Announce Star-Studded Power to the People Protest Festival
WASHINGTON — Bruce Springsteen launched a blistering attack on President Donald Trump during a concert at Nationals Park on Wednesday night, calling him “reckless, racist, incompetent, treasonous” and announcing a massive protest festival set for one month before the 2026 midterm elections.
Joined onstage by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Springsteen revealed the Power to the People Festival — a one-day, two-stage event scheduled for October 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, just outside the nation’s capital. The lineup, curated by Morello, reads like a who’s who of rock, hip-hop, and activism: Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, Brittany Howard, Jack Black, Dropkick Murphys, Cypress Hill, Killer Mike, Serj Tankian, and many more, as AP News reported.
A Fiery Call to Action
Springsteen’s performance was as much a political rally as a concert. He played some of his most politically charged songs, including “American Skin (41 Shots)” and “Streets of Minneapolis” — the latter written in response to the fatal shootings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in January.
“The Gestapo tactics of this president and this administration will not stand here,” Springsteen declared, according to USA Today. “This American tragedy can only be stopped by the American people: you. There is no one coming to save us. We’ve got to do it ourselves.”
He led the crowd in an “ICE out!” chant and directly addressed the White House: “Are you with us, Washington? Let them hear you at the f****** White House.”
The Festival and Its Mission
The Power to the People Festival is being billed as a “non-partisan” celebration of “freedom, justice, equality and rock ‘n’ roll,” though its anti-Trump stance is unmistakable. A portion of proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit VoteRiders and HeadCount, two voter advocacy organizations, underscoring the event’s focus on electoral engagement.
Morello described the festival’s purpose in a statement obtained by Loudwire: “The Power To The People festival is about freedom, justice, equality and rock ‘n’ roll. It’s about the power everyday human beings have when they come together through music, art, community and action.”
The festival will also feature “Freedom Village,” an immersive space highlighting civic engagement, grassroots organizing, education, mutual aid, and social impact initiatives. Pre-sale tickets begin May 29 at 10 AM ET, with general sale on May 30.
A Growing Wave of Artist Activism
This announcement marks a significant escalation in Springsteen’s political activism. The rock legend, who has been a vocal critic of Trump since the 2016 campaign, released the protest song “Streets of Minneapolis” in January and headlined the flagship “No Kings” rally in St. Paul, Minnesota, in March, drawing tens of thousands of protesters.
Trump has responded by calling Springsteen a “total loser who spews hate” and a “dried up prune,” urging a MAGA boycott of his shows, as The Independent reported.
The festival’s timing — one month before the November midterms — and its location near Washington, D.C., are clearly strategic. By assembling a lineup that spans generations and genres, from folk icon Joan Baez to hardcore acts like Dropkick Murphys, Springsteen and Morello are leveraging music’s unifying power to mobilize voters.
What This Means
The Power to the People festival represents a new chapter in the intersection of music and electoral politics. It builds on the momentum of the “No Kings” protests and the broader backlash against ICE enforcement actions, channeling cultural energy into concrete voter engagement.
With the 2026 midterm elections approaching and political tensions at a boiling point — amid ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, debates over voting rights, and the recent dismissal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — the festival positions itself as both a cultural event and a political statement.
Whether it will drive voter turnout or deepen the nation’s cultural divide remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the Boss is not backing down.
Tickets for the Power to the People Festival go on sale May 30 at 10 AM ET via the festival’s website.
