Patrick Bruel Withdraws from Enfoirés Amid Rape Allegations

French singer and actor Patrick Bruel has withdrawn from the upcoming Les Enfoirés charity performances after being targeted by multiple rape and sexual assault complaints, the artistic director of the troupe confirmed on Friday. The decision, announced by Anne Marcassus and first reported by RTL via RTBF, marks the end of Bruel’s 34-year tenure with one of France’s most beloved charitable institutions.

A Painful Farewell

In a message to his fellow Enfoirés members, Bruel expressed his decision to step away from the January 2027 shows “so as not to embarrass” the Restos du Cœur charity and the troupe he had been part of since 1993. “I wanted to tell you, with great sadness, that I will not be with you next January, as has been the case for 34 years,” Bruel wrote, according to the message reproduced by RTS. “I hope to find you again when justice has proven my innocence.”

Anne Marcassus confirmed the decision, stating: “Patrick Bruel has decided not to participate in the upcoming shows so as not to embarrass the Restos du Cœur association and the Enfoirés.”

The Allegations

The withdrawal is the latest development in a rapidly escalating scandal that began with a Mediapart investigation on March 18, 2026, in which eight women accused Bruel of sexual violence spanning from 1992 to 2019. As of May 23, at least 13 complaints have been filed — 12 in France and one in Belgium — including five for rape. Approximately 30 women have come forward with testimonies, according to Le Monde.

The most prominent accuser is TV host and author Flavie Flament, who filed a rape complaint on May 15 alleging Bruel assaulted her in 1991 when she was 16 years old, under chemical submission. Other accusers include Daniela Elstner, director general of Unifrance, who filed a complaint for attempted rape and sexual assault relating to an incident at the 1997 Acapulco Film Festival, and Karine Viseur, a Belgian press attaché who accuses Bruel of sexual assault at RTBF premises in Brussels in 2010.

Bruel’s Denial

Bruel has consistently denied all allegations. In a May 17 Instagram statement, reported by BFMTV, he wrote: “I have never forced a woman. I have never drugged, manipulated, or sought to subjugate anyone. I have never used my notoriety to abuse anyone.” He added that he trusts the justice system to “shed full light on these accusations.”

Mounting Consequences

The withdrawal from Les Enfoirés is the most significant professional consequence Bruel has faced, but it is far from the only one. Three concerts scheduled for December in Quebec have been cancelled, and the Bellarena Indoor Festival in Fribourg, Switzerland, postponed his June 26 performance. Several mayors, including those of Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Nancy, have called on Bruel to cancel his planned tour, which is set to begin on June 16 at the Cirque d’Hiver in Paris.

Radio stations RFM, RMC, and France Bleu have stopped playing Bruel’s music, while Sony Music has suspended promotional activities. On May 22, the city of Liège suspended Bruel’s honorary citizenship, granted in 2022, as reported by RTBF. Mayor Willy Demeyer stated the suspension was taken “pending the outcome of the case and in respect of the presumption of innocence.”

A Watershed Moment for French Entertainment

The Bruel case represents a significant moment in the French #MeToo movement. The sheer number of accusers and the span of decades covered — from 1991 to 2019 — have prompted comparisons to the Weinstein effect in Hollywood. The case has also raised questions about how the French justice system handles sexual violence allegations involving celebrities, particularly after multiple complaints were classified without action in 2020 only to be reopened in 2026.

According to Franceinfo, the Paris prosecutor has confirmed that complaints will be consolidated at the Nanterre court, suggesting a coordinated judicial approach. A separate investigation is ongoing in Belgium.

What’s Next

As Bruel’s planned tour approaches, the question of whether further cancellations will follow remains open. The singer’s 34-year legacy with Les Enfoirés — an institution created by comedian Coluche in 1985 to support the Restos du Cœur food bank charity — now hangs in the balance. Bruel’s message to his colleagues ended on a note of hope: “I wish you the best. I hope to find you again when justice has proven my innocence.” Whether that reunion will ever take place depends on the investigations now underway in both France and Belgium.
