Destadsbader Thanks Supporters After Devastating House Fire

Belgian singer and television presenter Niels Destadsbader has released a new single titled “Vuur en Vlam” (Fire and Flame), reflecting on the devastating fire that destroyed his loft in Deerlijk two and a half years ago. In a recent interview with VRT NWS, Destadsbader spoke about the overwhelming support he received from fellow Belgians, including businessman Mark Coucke, celebrity chef Jeroen Meus, and radio presenter Linde Merckpoel.

The Fire and Its Aftermath

On March 8, 2024, a major industrial fire broke out at HVP Lighting, a lighting distributor in Deerlijk, West Flanders. The fire completely destroyed the company premises. Destadsbader’s loft, located in the front building of the company, burned down completely. He was at home at the time and managed to save his dog before fleeing to his parents’ house, which was two doors away and spared by the fire. No injuries were reported, and the fire was linked to roofing work being carried out at the time, according to VRT NWS.

Destadsbader lost almost all of his personal belongings in the blaze. The fire created a large smoke plume that drifted toward the center of Deerlijk and neighboring Harelbeke, prompting warnings for residents to keep windows and doors closed.

A Song of Gratitude

Rather than a melancholic ballad, “Vuur en Vlam” is described by Destadsbader as a thank-you to everyone who supported him after the tragedy.

“Het is vooral een soort dankjewel aan alle mensen die er toen voor mij geweest zijn.” (“It is mainly a kind of thank you to all the people who were there for me then.”)

He reflected on how the experience changed his perspective: “Als je huis afbrandt, denk je dat je alles kwijt bent. Maar dan zie je pas hoeveel je eigenlijk hebt. Namelijk de mensen rondom je. Die allemaal alles meehelpen dragen” (“When your house burns down, you think you’ve lost everything. But then you see how much you actually have. Namely the people around you. Who all help carry everything”).

Unexpected Acts of Kindness

The support Destadsbader received came from many quarters, including some surprising sources. Mark Coucke, the Belgian businessman and hotel owner, immediately offered free overnight stays at his hotel in Knokke. Radio presenter Linde Merckpoel collected photos from family and friends so Destadsbader could have framed pictures as his first memories to hang up again.

Perhaps the most touching gesture came from Jeroen Meus, the well-known Flemish television chef. “Plots stond er iemand met een pakket aan de deur. Jeroen Meus had een doos vol potten en pannen gestuurd met een briefje waarin stond ‘Dan moet je daar al niet meer aan denken’,” Destadsbader recalled (“Suddenly someone was at the door with a package. Jeroen Meus had sent a box full of pots and pans with a note saying ‘Then you don’t have to think about that anymore’”). He noted that he does not know Meus well personally, making the gesture particularly special.

Moving Forward

Initially, Destadsbader moved into a rental apartment. After two and a half years, he is finally moving into his permanent home in early June 2026. “Ik kijk er geweldig naar uit,” he said (“I’m really looking forward to it”).

On the one-year anniversary of the fire in March 2025, Destadsbader posted an emotional Instagram message reflecting on his journey. As reported by HLN, he wrote: “Vandaag - exact een jaar geleden - stond mijn wereld stil. Van de ene dag op de andere was ik alles kwijt en moest ik helemaal opnieuw beginnen. Maar vandaag - 365 dagen later - heeft dat verdriet plaats gemaakt voor dankbaarheid” (“Today - exactly one year ago - my world stood still. From one day to the next I had lost everything and had to start all over again. But today - 365 days later - that sadness has made way for gratitude”).

A Story of Belgian Solidarity

The story has resonated deeply in Belgium, where community solidarity, or “samenhorigheid,” is a cherished value. The involvement of well-known public figures from different sectors—business, television, and radio—amplified the story’s appeal and demonstrated cross-sector support among Belgian celebrities.

Destadsbader’s journey from tragedy to gratitude, culminating in the release of “Vuur en Vlam,” serves as a testament to the power of community in times of crisis. As he prepares to move into his new home, the singer carries with him not only new belongings but a profound appreciation for the people who helped him rebuild his life.
