China’s Wheat Harvest Nears 30% in Three Summers Peak

China’s summer grain wheat harvest has reached nearly 30% completion, with 95.19 million mu (approximately 15.87 million acres) harvested as of June 1, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The rapid progress marks an intensification of the “Three Summers” (三夏) farming season, the busiest agricultural period of the year.

Record Mechanization Drives Harvest Momentum

On June 1 alone, farmers harvested 19.06 million mu using 229,400 combine harvesters — a 338% increase in daily harvest volume compared to the same day last year, when 4.35 million mu were harvested with 78,300 combines, Xinhua reported.

China’s total winter wheat planting area for 2026 stands at approximately 340 million mu (about 56.67 million acres). The accelerated pace reflects both favorable weather conditions and significant improvements in agricultural mechanization capacity.

Regional Progress Varies Across Provinces

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, regional harvest progress as of June 1 shows a clear northward progression:

  • Anhui: Harvest progress exceeded 50%
  • Henan: Exceeded 35%
  • Jiangsu and Shaanxi: Exceeded 10%
  • Shandong and Shanxi: Scattered harvesting underway
  • Southwest China: Wheat harvest completed successfully

CCTV News reported that wheat harvesting areas are experiencing sustained sunny and hot weather, with farmers across the country seizing the opportunity to harvest promptly.

Government Mobilization at Full Scale

The “Three Summers” season has drawn high-level government attention. Vice Premier Liu Guozhong convened a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture on May 22 to deploy summer agricultural work, emphasizing that “every link and every detail must be handled well to ensure summer grain is fully harvested and summer planting is completed with sufficient area and quality,” according to the Chinese government website.

To support the harvest, over 17 million agricultural machines and tools have been deployed nationwide, with more than 200,000 units operating across regions. Transportation authorities have opened over 5,500 green channels for agricultural machinery at highway toll stations nationwide, as reported by China News Service.

The nine key wheat-harvesting provinces have organized more than 3,300 regional agricultural machinery social service centers, over 2,000 regional agricultural emergency disaster relief centers, and more than 5,900 regular agricultural machinery emergency response service teams to ensure mature wheat is harvested quickly and dried properly.

Weather Window and Challenges Ahead

The current clear and hot weather from May 31 to June 2 has created ideal harvesting conditions. However, a new round of widespread rainfall is forecast from June 3, moving east from the Jianghuai region, according to 21 Economic. This weather window is critical for central and eastern wheat-growing regions.

Earlier this season, Hubei Province faced severe challenges after three consecutive rounds of heavy rainfall since mid-May. The province mobilized 93,000 combine harvesters, 420 emergency service teams, and 2,400 drying centers in a “rain-snatching harvest” campaign that has largely succeeded in completing the province’s wheat harvest.

Smart Agriculture Transforms the Harvest

Technology is playing an increasingly vital role in this year’s harvest. In Henan’s Huaibin County, a “smart agriculture” platform integrates Beidou positioning, satellite remote sensing, and IoT technology to enable full-process digital management from planting to storage.

Ren Chaochao, manager of the Huaibin County Huaihe Ecological Smart Agriculture Management Platform, explained that the system “precisely connects data collection, agricultural machinery dispatch, and warehousing logistics, achieving full-process digital management from planting to storage.” Over 120 harvesters and 100 grain trucks are tracked in real-time on digital maps with color-coded progress indicators.

Broader Significance for Food Security

The summer grain harvest accounts for approximately 20% of China’s annual grain output, with over 90% of summer grain being winter wheat. The high-level attention and massive resource mobilization underscore the strategic importance of this harvest to China’s national food security agenda.

With fuel support from China Petroleum and China Sinopec providing an 8% discount on agricultural machinery fuel, and over 200 fuel delivery vehicles dispatched directly to fields, the government is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a successful harvest.

What to Watch

As the harvest enters its peak phase, attention now turns to whether the forecast rainfall from June 3 will significantly impact progress in central and eastern provinces. The effectiveness of emergency response systems and drying capacity will be tested in the coming days. Meanwhile, the summer planting phase — the second component of the “Three Summers” — will begin in earnest once harvesting is complete, setting the stage for autumn grain production.
