Trump Takes Center Stage for America’s 250th and World Cup

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has positioned himself as the central figure in planning America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, breaking sharply with historical precedent by placing himself — rather than the nation’s founding ideals — at the heart of both events. From a UFC fight on the White House lawn to commemorative passports bearing his image, Trump’s personal brand is woven into nearly every major celebration planned for this summer.

A President in the Spotlight

The approach marks a significant departure from how previous presidents handled milestone anniversaries. During the 1976 Bicentennial, President Gerald Ford deliberately stepped back, speaking at Valley Forge and Independence Hall but ensuring the celebration focused on the nation rather than himself. As Marc Stein, a history professor at San Francisco State University and author of “Bicentennial: A Revolutionary History of the 1970s,” noted: “While Ford certainly hoped to use the bicentennial to promote his reelection campaign, he didn’t do it in such a self-aggrandizing, self-centered, narcissistic way.”

Trump, by contrast, has embraced a far more personal approach. According to AP News, he announced he would become the “headlining act” of the Great American State Fair after nearly all scheduled musical performers pulled out of the Freedom 250 concert series, fearing the event had become too closely tied to the president.

The Great American State Fair and Freedom 250

The Great American State Fair, a 16-day exposition running from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall, is the centerpiece of the administration’s anniversary plans. It is organized under Freedom 250 — a public-private partnership created by Trump that operates alongside the congressionally chartered, bipartisan America250 commission.

Several high-profile artists, including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, and the Commodores, dropped out of the concert series, with some saying they were misled about the event’s political affiliations. In response, Trump posted on Truth Social that he was considering replacing the performers with “the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Commemorative Currency and Passports

The personalization of the anniversary extends beyond events to official government documents and currency. According to AP News, the State Department is issuing limited-edition passports featuring Trump’s picture for the 250th anniversary, making him the first living president to appear on the document. Officials have also designed a new $250 bill bearing Trump’s image, and the U.S. Mint is producing a 24-karat gold commemorative coin with his face — recalling a similar coin from the 1926 sesquicentennial that featured President Calvin Coolidge.

UFC at the White House

On June 14, which coincides with Trump’s 80th birthday, a UFC bout is scheduled on the White House South Lawn. Construction crews have been building a fight cage and arena that will hold approximately 5,000 spectators, with an additional 75,000 to 100,000 fans watching on nearby screens. The White House has said UFC is covering the costs, with UFC President Dana White telling the Sports Business Journal: “We’re eating the whole thing.”

Historians Weigh In

Timothy Naftali, a clinical associate professor at Columbia University and former director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, told AP News that Trump “generally has contempt for norms” and rarely mentions “the great sweep of history.” Naftali added: “Whatever filters there were in the first term — and there weren’t many — are gone. It’s undiluted Donald Trump.”

Stein was more pointed, arguing that Trump’s version of history is “closer to propaganda, and it’s closer to cheerleading.”

World Cup 2026

Trump’s involvement extends to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The president created a federal World Cup task force and chairs it himself, appointing Andrew Giuliani — son of former Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani — as executive director. Trump received a FIFA Peace Prize from FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center in December 2025, and has said he will be on stage to present the golden trophy to the winning team.

A Tale of Two Celebrations

The existence of two parallel organizations — the bipartisan America250 commission chaired by Rosie Rios, and the Trump-aligned Freedom 250 — reflects the political polarization surrounding the anniversary. America250 has focused on educational programs, community initiatives, and a time capsule to be opened in 2276. Freedom 250, meanwhile, has pursued large-scale spectacles including the state fair, the UFC fight, and a record-breaking fireworks display.

Rosie Rios said America250 “has had a very supportive and collaborative relationship with the organizations planning initiatives on behalf of the president.” White House spokesman Davis Ingle described the administration’s beautification projects as giving the capital “the glory it deserves during our nation’s historic semiquincentennial celebration.”

What to Watch For

As the July 4 anniversary approaches, several questions remain unanswered. Will the Freedom 250 concerts be successfully replaced by Trump’s rally format? How will legal challenges to White House renovations — including a halted $400 million ballroom project — resolve? And how will international visitors respond to Trump’s central role in the World Cup festivities?

What is clear is that America’s 250th birthday will be unlike any national celebration in modern history — with the president not merely presiding over the festivities, but starring in them.
