Renewi Fire in Seraing Probed as Possible Arson

Industrial Fire at Renewi Waste Facility in Seraing Under Investigation

An industrial fire broke out late Friday evening at the Renewi waste management facility in Seraing, Belgium, mobilizing approximately 30 firefighters from the Liège fire zone who worked through the night to bring the blaze under control. While initial reports described the fire as apparently accidental, investigators are now examining possible criminal origins after surveillance cameras captured a suspect on site.

The Incident

The fire ignited around 22:30–23:00 on Friday, June 5, in a 100-square-meter pile of wood stored at the Renewi facility, located along Rue Greinier and Rue de l’Environnement in the Ougrée district of Seraing, according to RTBF. Residents reported seeing a thick column of smoke rising over the area as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Firefighters from the Liège emergency zone deployed multiple vehicles and utilized a permanent water cistern on site, which was regularly refilled by two additional cisterns making continuous trips to ensure adequate water supply. A spokesperson for the Liège fire zone explained: “A cistern is permanently on site. It is regularly refilled by two other cisterns that make the trips to ensure the teams have enough water.”

By Saturday morning at approximately 08:30, the fire had been brought under control, though extinguishing operations were expected to continue for several more hours, as reported by DHNet.

No Risk to Residents

Authorities confirmed that the fumes from the fire were not toxic and that no special measures were taken to protect local residents. “No risk to residents is to be feared and no particular measures have been taken with regard to them,” the fire service stated, as reported by La Libre.

Possible Criminal Origin

While initial reports from multiple outlets, including RTBF and La Libre via the Belga news agency, described the fire as “apparently accidental,” a more detailed investigation by RTL Info revealed that firefighters are now treating the origin as potentially criminal. According to RTL Info, a suspect was captured on the site’s surveillance cameras, prompting firefighters to remark that “a pile of wood does not catch fire by itself in the middle of the night.” An investigation is to be launched.

Background: A History of Fires

This is not the first fire at a Renewi facility in the Liège region. The same Seraing site experienced a fire on June 3, 2025, when flames broke out in the early afternoon. Firefighters responded quickly, established a security perimeter, and brought the fire under control by approximately 16:30, according to the Ville de Seraing official website.

More significantly, Renewi’s Wandre site — located approximately 10 kilometers north of Seraing — has experienced multiple fires in recent years. A major fire in August 2023 ravaged part of the facility, producing thick black smoke visible across the region. According to an RTBF investigation from September 2023, there had been at least four fires at the Wandre site since 2021, with local residents expressing frustration over “fires at repetition, several times a year.”

Analysis and Implications

The recurrence of fires at Renewi sites raises questions about fire prevention measures at waste processing facilities in Wallonia. While the Seraing fire involved only wood and produced non-toxic fumes, the proximity of the site to residential areas means any escalation could pose risks to nearby residents.

If the criminal origin is confirmed, the incident would transform from an industrial accident to a potential arson case, carrying significant legal implications. The investigation will focus on identifying the suspect captured on surveillance cameras and determining their motives.

What’s Next

Extinguishing operations continue at the Seraing site, with firefighters remaining on location. The investigation into the fire’s origin — whether accidental or criminal — will determine the next steps for both law enforcement and Renewi’s operations in the region. Regulatory scrutiny of Renewi’s fire safety protocols may also intensify given the company’s history of incidents at its Liège-area facilities.
