China Reaches Indonesia Open Mixed, Women’s Doubles Finals

JAKARTA — Chinese badminton pairs have secured spots in both the mixed doubles and women’s doubles finals at the 2026 Indonesia Open, a BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament, following commanding semifinal performances at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno on Saturday.

Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi defeated fellow Chinese pair Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui in a three-game thriller, while top-seeded women’s doubles duo Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning swept aside their Indonesian opponents in straight games, as reported by People’s Daily.

Semifinal Highlights

In mixed doubles, Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi overcame the All England Open champions Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui with a scoreline of 21:19, 11:21, 21:11. The victory marks a significant milestone for the emerging pair, who had already stunned top seeds Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping in the quarterfinals earlier in the week.

According to China News Service, this is Cheng and Zhang’s third final appearance of the 2026 season, following title wins at the German Open and Swiss Open — both Super 300 events. The Indonesia Open final represents their first appearance in a Super 1000 championship match.

In women’s doubles, world No. 1 pair Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning defeated Indonesian duo Alessia and Febi 2-0 to book their place in the final. The defending champions, who won the Indonesia Open title in 2025, will face Japanese pair Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Matsumoto in Sunday’s final, as confirmed by China Daily.

Chen Yufei’s Narrow Miss

China’s women’s singles star and Olympic gold medalist Chen Yufei came agonizingly close to joining her compatriots in the finals but fell to world No. 1 An Se-young of South Korea in a gripping three-game semifinal, losing 17:21, 21:19, 23:21.

“The opponent played very patiently and slowed down the pace. An Se-young’s control of the shuttle made my attacks less effective,” Chen said after the match, according to China News Service. “This match felt both happy and regretful, because I was very close to victory.”

The deciding game went to 23-21, highlighting the razor-thin margins between two of the sport’s elite players.

Tournament Context

The 2026 Indonesia Open, the 44th edition of the prestigious tournament, is being held from June 2 to 7 at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta. With a total prize purse of US$1,450,000, it is one of the richest events on the BWF World Tour calendar, classified as a Super 1000 tournament — the highest tier below the World Tour Finals, according to Wikipedia.

China has historically been a dominant force in international badminton, particularly in doubles events. In women’s doubles, Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning’s victory in 2025 broke an eight-year drought for China in the Indonesia Open women’s doubles event, with Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan having been the last Chinese champions in 2017.

Rising Stars in Mixed Doubles

Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi represent a new generation of Chinese mixed doubles talent. Zhang Chi, born in 2002 in Hunan Province, has climbed to a career-high world ranking of No. 10 in mixed doubles since partnering with Cheng Xing in 2024. Their 2026 season has been remarkable: champions at the German Open and Swiss Open, semifinalists at the Thailand Open, and now finalists at the Indonesia Open.

The pair’s journey to the final included a notable upset of top-seeded compatriots Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping in the quarterfinals, signaling their arrival on the biggest stage.

What to Watch For

Finals day on Sunday, June 7, will see Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning attempt to defend their women’s doubles title against the experienced Japanese pair of Fukushima and Matsumoto. In mixed doubles, Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi will face their opponents in what promises to be a historic moment for the young pair as they compete for their first Super 1000 title.

The strong showing across multiple disciplines underscores China’s continued competitiveness in international badminton, with the team reaching semifinals in three of five events at this year’s tournament.
