12 Wounded in Ohio Shooting Near Street Festival

A shooting erupted near the Old West End Festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday evening, leaving 12 people wounded and sending hundreds of festivalgoers scrambling for cover. Police are actively searching for two suspects believed to have been firing at each other, according to AP News.

The Incident

The gunfire broke out on the afternoon of June 6 near Delaware and Glenwood avenues in Toledo’s historic Old West End neighborhood. The area was packed with hundreds of attendees enjoying the annual two-day community festival, which features live music, food vendors, home tours, and shopping.

All 12 victims — ranging in age from 14 to 61, with most in their early 20s — were hospitalized and are in stable condition, according to the Toledo Blade. Two were critically injured, but all are expected to survive.

“As far as violence, this is over the top,” said Lt. Dan Gerken of the Toledo Police Department, a 32-year veteran. “Twelve people being shot, that’s the most I’ve been to a scene. I’ve been to a lot of scenes, but this is way over the top.”

Investigation Underway

Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan stated that it appeared two individuals were “probably shooting at each other” and that neither is believed to be among the wounded. No arrests have been made, and police have not released descriptions of the suspects.

Authorities have urged festivalgoers to come forward with any photos or videos that might have captured the suspects. Mobile security cameras were active at the festival and feeding into the department’s real-time crime center. Additionally, eight off-duty Lucas County Sheriff’s deputies were already on-site providing general security, as confirmed by the Toledo Blade.

Toledo Fire & Rescue Department Chief Allison Armstrong said first responders faced significant challenges due to closed roads and traffic congestion but managed to assess, treat, and transport all patients within one hour.

Community and Political Response

The shooting has sparked outrage and sorrow across Toledo. Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates vowed “swift and strong” justice, calling the incident “personal.”

“Those who were frightened, traumatized or harmed by this violence will remain at the forefront of our efforts,” Bates said in a statement, as reported by the Toledo Blade. “I’ve felt outrage before, but this is personal. This is my home. These are my friends and neighbors. It is not OK.”

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz called for a re-evaluation of security at large public events, suggesting potential measures including curfews, metal detectors, bag checks, and age restrictions, according to the Toledo Blade.

“It’s a national story, but now we’re part of the national story,” the mayor said. “Something seems broken about an American system that tolerates 170 mass shootings not even halfway through the year.”

Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel visited Toledo on June 8 to offer state support, as reported by the Toledo Blade. Both gubernatorial candidates — Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Dr. Amy Acton — issued statements, signaling that gun violence is emerging as a key issue in the November 2026 election.

Festival Canceled

The remainder of the Old West End Festival was canceled on Sunday. Organizers said continuing “would not be compassionate, responsible or possible.”

“We are heartbroken about those that were injured at the Old West End Festival,” said Dan Finkel, the festival’s public relations chairman. “Many people want to know how we proceed from such a dark place.”

Broader Context

The Toledo shooting was one of at least two mass shootings across the U.S. over the weekend. In Kansas City, Missouri, nine adults were injured in a separate shooting early Saturday, with no suspects in custody.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the U.S. has recorded 174 mass shootings as of June 7, 2026 — defined as incidents in which four or more victims are injured or killed, excluding the perpetrator.

What’s Next

Police continue to follow multiple leads and have urged anyone with information to contact the Crime Stopper program at 419-255-1111. The Old West End Association has scheduled community support sessions to help residents process the trauma.

As the investigation continues, key questions remain: Who are the two shooters, and what was their motive? Why did the shooting occur despite a security presence of eight deputies? And what security changes will the city implement for future events?

For now, a historic neighborhood known for its Victorian homes and community spirit is left to heal — and to ensure that one of its most cherished traditions can continue safely.
