Explosion in Teenager’s Room Destroys Home in Zele, Family Escapes Unharmed
A powerful explosion in a teenager’s bedroom has severely damaged a family home in Zele, East Flanders, lifting the roof momentarily and displacing the outer wall. Remarkably, the family of four — two parents and two children — escaped without injury.
The blast occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 11, in a home on Langestraat, a residential street in the municipality of approximately 21,000 residents. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, a small fire broke out first in the teenager’s room before escalating into a loud explosion. The fire extinguished itself before firefighters arrived.
Extensive Damage
Fire Officer Thijs Dauwe of the Zele Fire Brigade described the scene. “The explosion displaced the outer wall, even lifted the roof momentarily and shattered the windows on the first floor,” he told reporters. All windows on the first floor were blown out, glass scattered across the roadway, and a parked car sustained light damage. Bricks fell onto the street, and interior walls were severely damaged and shifted.
The structural damage was so severe that firefighters had to shore up the house to prevent collapse. “That’s why we had to shore it up to guarantee the stability of the home,” Dauwe explained. “The property has been declared uninhabitable and further investigation will determine what needs to be done with it.” Local officials indicated the home will likely need to be demolished.
As reported by VRT NWS, the family managed to evacuate on their own, uninjured but deeply shaken. They are now being sheltered by relatives. Mayor Hans Knop (CD&V) confirmed the arrangement and expressed relief that no casualties occurred and that neighboring homes sustained no damage.
Investigation Underway
The public prosecutor’s office of East Flanders appointed a fire expert to investigate the cause. The expert determined that the explosion was accidental, though specific details have not been released. This is standard procedure while investigations remain ongoing.
Neighbors reported not hearing the explosion itself but were woken by the emergency response. “There were a lot of people here and I was impressed, but I had absolutely no idea what had happened and hadn’t heard anything either,” one neighbor told HLN.
Community Impact
The incident has drawn significant local attention, becoming the most-read and most-shared article on HLN’s Zele regional page. The Langestraat remains partially closed at the site of the incident.
While the exact cause remains officially undisclosed, the incident has sparked public discussion about potential hazards in bedrooms, including charging devices, aerosol cans, and gas appliances. However, authorities have not issued any specific public safety warnings.
What’s Next
The affected family faces an uncertain future as their home is likely beyond repair. They continue to receive support from relatives while awaiting further investigation results that will determine whether the structure can be salvaged or must be demolished. The community of Zele has rallied around the family, with the incident serving as a stark reminder of how quickly an ordinary night can turn into a life-altering event.
