Red Cross Urges Blood Donations Before Summer Holidays
The Red Cross of Belgium has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, specifically targeting holidaymakers who are about to depart for summer vacations. With blood reserves typically coming under strain during the summer months, the organization is urging donors to give blood before they leave to ensure hospitals remain adequately supplied.
“We absolutely must consolidate blood reserves before the start of summer holidays, to avoid any strain on hospitals,” said Thomas Paulus, Communications Manager of the Blood Service at the Red Cross of Belgium, as reported by RTBF.
A Recurring Summer Challenge
Summer blood shortages are a well-documented, recurring issue in Belgium. Collection centers see fewer visitors as regular donors go on holiday, yet medical needs remain constant. The Red Cross has launched similar pre-summer appeals in previous years — including in 2024 and 2025 — highlighting a persistent structural challenge.
Adding to the complexity, returning from certain tourist destinations — even within Europe — can result in a temporary ban on donating blood for several weeks, the organization warned in a press release distributed via the Belga news agency and published by La Libre.
Special Focus on Negative Blood Groups
The appeal places particular emphasis on donors with negative blood groups (A-, B-, O-, and AB-). These groups are rarer in the population but have greater compatibility, making them especially valuable in emergency situations.
“A minority in the population, negative groups are sought after because of their greater compatibility, valuable in life-threatening emergency situations,” the Red Cross stated in its communiqué, as covered by DHnet. “Group O negative in particular is called the universal donor: it can be transfused to other ABO Rhesus positive and negative groups.”
The Red Cross specifically invited donors from these groups to plan a donation in the coming weeks.
Timed for World Blood Donor Day
The appeal was strategically launched on June 14, 2026 — World Blood Donor Day — an annual event established by the World Health Organization to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors.
This timing follows a campaign launched in late May specifically targeting negative blood groups, titled “Les négatifs, c’est 100% positif !” (“Negatives, it’s 100% positive!”), as highlighted on the Red Cross Blood Service website.
Eligibility and How to Donate
All healthy adults weighing at least 50 kilograms are eligible to donate blood, up to four times per year. The Red Cross Blood Service (Service du Sang) organizes blood drives throughout Wallonia and Brussels. Potential donors can find nearby collection locations and check real-time blood stock levels for each group via the official website at donneurdesang.be.
Plasma donations are also critically needed, with the Red Cross reporting “largely insufficient” plasma stocks.
A Structural Challenge
Beyond the seasonal appeal, the Red Cross faces a longer-term challenge in donor recruitment stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. During the health crisis, the organization was unable to recruit new donors, disrupting the natural replacement cycle where departing donors are replaced by new volunteers. Collection campaigns have been running 5-15% below targets as a result.
What’s Next
The Red Cross hopes that the World Blood Donor Day timing and the targeted appeal to holidaymakers will help bolster reserves before the peak summer period. With hospitals depending on a steady supply of blood and blood products, the coming weeks will be critical for ensuring Belgium’s healthcare system remains resilient through the summer.
Potential donors are encouraged to visit donneurdesang.be to find a nearby collection center and schedule a donation before departing on holiday.
