Xi’an East Railway Station Opens as Major New High-Speed Rail Hub

China has added a major new high-speed rail hub to its rapidly expanding network, with Xi’an East Railway Station officially completed and ready for operation as of June 15, 2026. The station, located in the Baqiao District of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, connects the Xi’an-Yan’an and Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed rail lines and is expected to handle an estimated 36.5 million passengers annually, according to CCTV News.

A Landmark for the 15th Five-Year Plan

Xi’an East Station holds particular significance as the first large-scale railway station building unveiled in the opening year of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030). The station’s completion signals continued government prioritization of transportation infrastructure investment as a driver of economic development, particularly in western China.

The station complex spans a total building area of 394,000 square meters, with the station building itself covering 100,000 square meters. It features 13 platforms and 27 lines, comprising a Xi’an-Chongqing high-speed rail yard (5 platforms, 9 lines), a Wuhan-Xi’an high-speed rail yard (4 platforms, 8 lines), and a Xi’an-Ankang conventional rail yard (4 platforms, 10 lines). Classified as a special-class station, it is managed by China Railway Xi’an Bureau Group Co., Ltd.

Architectural Design: Blending Heritage and Modernity

The station’s architectural design draws inspiration from the region’s cultural heritage, with the theme “Qin Mountains and Wei River, Silk Road Chang’an.” The roof features an undulating, staggered design that evokes the grandeur of the “800 li Qin Chuan” (the vast Qinchuan plain). The design incorporates Silk Road and Chang’an (Xi’an’s ancient name) motifs, positioning the station as a modern landmark along China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

As a comprehensive transport hub, Xi’an East Station integrates high-speed rail, conventional rail, subway, and bus services, creating a seamless multi-modal transit experience for passengers.

Network Integration and Regional Impact

A key feature of the new station is its interconnection with Xi’an North Station, the city’s other major rail hub. According to a report from Shaanxi Daily, the successful connection of the Xi’an-Yan’an HSR main line to Xi’an East Station marks “the interconnection of the two major hub lines of Xi’an North Station and Xi’an East Station, with the two core HSR stations ‘shaking hands.’”

This dual-hub system creates a flexible railway network that allows for more efficient train routing and passenger transfers. Through connecting lines, Xi’an East Station will link to multiple major high-speed rail trunk lines, including the Xulan, Xicheng, Yinxi, and Daxi lines, with future connections planned to the Xi’an-Chongqing HSR.

The station’s operational impact on travel times will be substantial. The Xi’an-Yan’an HSR is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to under one hour, while the Xi’an-Shiyan HSR — a 255.7 km line with a design speed of 350 km/h — will cut the Xi’an-Wuhan journey to approximately two hours.

Construction Timeline and Milestones

Construction of Xi’an East Station began on November 30, 2022, following years of planning and regulatory approvals. The project achieved its main structure completion on October 27, 2025, and the metal roofing — the largest of any high-speed rail station under construction in northwestern China at the time — was completed on January 15, 2026. By February 2026, 90% of total construction was finished, and the station entered its static inspection phase on May 7, 2026.

Deng Jun, Deputy Director of the Science, Technology and Information Department at Xi’an Railway Bureau, stated that “the successful implementation of these two project milestones is an important measure to improve the transportation organization of the Xi’an-Yan’an HSR and optimize hub connections.”

Broader Strategic Significance

Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province and the ancient starting point of the Silk Road, has long been a critical railway junction in China. The city already operates Xi’an Station (built 1934, renovated 2021), Xi’an North Station (opened 2011, currently the largest in Northwest China with 18 platforms and 34 lines), and Xi’an West Station. Xi’an East Station now adds a fourth major railway station, creating a comprehensive “East-North” dual-hub system.

The station strengthens Xi’an’s position as a national railway hub and supports the economic integration of the Guanzhong city cluster with northern Shaanxi and the Yangtze River region. As China Economic Net reported, once operational, the station will form a high-speed rail network radiating across northwestern China and connecting to the national grid, further improving the country’s high-speed railway network layout.

What to Watch For

While the station is now ready for operation, the exact official opening date for passenger services has not yet been announced. Key questions remain regarding the redistribution of train services between Xi’an North and East stations, the timeline for the future Xi’an-Chongqing HSR connection, and whether the Xi’an-Shiyan HSR will open simultaneously with the station. These developments will determine how quickly the full benefits of this major infrastructure investment are realized.

As the first major railway project completed in China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period, Xi’an East Station represents a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing expansion of its high-speed rail network and its commitment to infrastructure-led development in western China.
