Cyclist, 36, Dies After Collision in Nieuwpoort
A 36-year-old cyclist from Pervijze died on Tuesday morning following a collision with a passenger car in Nieuwpoort, a coastal city in West Flanders, Belgium. Emergency services were unable to save the victim, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene, according to VRT NWS.
The Incident
The accident occurred during the morning rush hour at the intersection of Dienstweg Havengeul and Robert Orlentpromenade, near the harbor channel. According to initial findings reported by Focus en WTV, the cyclist swerved to avoid a parked vehicle with a trailer belonging to a gardener, and subsequently collided with an oncoming passenger car. After the initial impact, the car also struck the parked trailer.
The driver of the car, a 77-year-old woman from Nieuwpoort, received medical care at the scene but did not require hospitalization. KW.be identified the vehicle as a BMW.
Investigation Underway
Police and fire services closed off the accident site shortly after the collision. The public prosecutor’s office for West Flanders (Parket West-Vlaanderen, afdeling Veurne) was notified, and a traffic expert arrived at the scene later that morning to investigate the precise circumstances of the crash.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation will determine whether any charges will be filed against the driver.
Broader Context
The accident highlights ongoing concerns about cyclist safety in Belgium, a country with one of the highest rates of cycling participation in Europe. Fatal collisions involving cyclists remain a recurring issue, particularly in coastal areas like Nieuwpoort, where narrow service roads and mixed traffic conditions can create hazardous situations.
Nieuwpoort is a popular tourist destination at the mouth of the Yser River, known for its harbor and marina. The Dienstweg Havengeul is a service road running parallel to the harbor channel where vehicular traffic is permitted.
What’s Next
The traffic expert’s report will be submitted to the public prosecutor’s office, which will determine whether further legal action is warranted. Local cycling advocacy groups are expected to call for renewed attention to road safety measures in the area, particularly at intersections where cyclists and motor vehicles share the road.
