Socialist Wins DC Mayoral Primary, Trump Clash Looms
Janeese Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist member of the Washington, D.C. City Council, has won the Democratic mayoral primary, positioning herself to become the first democratic socialist mayor of the nation’s capital. Her victory sets the stage for a potential confrontation with President Donald Trump, who has threatened a federal takeover of the district if a “crazy socialist” wins the mayor’s office.
According to Fox News, Lewis George’s main challenger, Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, conceded the race on the morning of June 18, clearing the way for her to secure victory in the district’s first ranked-choice primary election. With nearly 73% of votes counted, Lewis George led with 52.9% to McDuffie’s 36.4% — an 18.5-point margin.
Context: A City at a Crossroads
Washington, D.C., operates under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973, which allows residents to elect their own mayor and city council. However, Congress retains ultimate authority over the district, including the power to overturn local laws and take control of local governance. Trump has already invoked the Home Rule Act to deploy the National Guard to D.C. and assert federal control over the Metropolitan Police Department in August 2025.
Outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser opted not to seek a fourth term after occasionally cooperating with the Trump administration on crime crackdowns. Lewis George represents a sharp departure from Bowser’s more pragmatic approach, promising aggressive progressive policies and a confrontational stance toward federal intervention.
As WTOP News reported, the general election in November is all but a formality in the overwhelmingly Democratic district, where nearly 75% of registered voters are Democrats. Lewis George is expected to easily defeat any Republican challenger.
Who Is Janeese Lewis George?
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Lewis George, 38, is a graduate of St. John’s University and Howard University School of Law. She worked as a prosecutor in Philadelphia and the D.C. Attorney General’s office before entering politics. In June 2020, she defeated incumbent Brandon Todd in the Ward 4 D.C. Council Democratic primary with 54.76% of the vote, becoming the first self-described democratic socialist on the council since Hilda Mason in 1998.
Lewis George joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2018 and has since built a reputation as a progressive firebrand. Her policy platform includes universal childcare capped at 7% of household income, building 72,000 new housing units over five years through zoning reform, and ending cooperation between the Metropolitan Police Department and federal immigration enforcement.
She has been dubbed “D.C.’s Mamdani” in reference to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a fellow democratic socialist who won the NYC mayoral race, highlighting the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America in urban politics.
The Trump Factor
President Trump has made “cleaning up D.C.” a priority of his second term. When asked by reporters how he would respond if Lewis George won, Trump stated: “I wouldn’t like it — and maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis. We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses.”
Lewis George has been a vocal opponent of Trump’s federal intervention in the district. Following the president’s deployment of the National Guard in August 2025, she said: “Like many of you, I am shocked and outraged that President Trump has announced he is weaponizing the Home Rule Act by deploying the National Guard and exercising authority over the Metropolitan Police Department. This is a direct attack on the 700,000 residents of DC and we will not stand for it.”
During a primary debate, she also criticized the use of curfews enforced by federal troops, arguing that “masked ICE agents” and federal troops lacked proper training in de-escalation and accountability to D.C. residents.
Policy Platform and Controversies
Lewis George’s campaign has drawn support from progressive groups including Black Lives Matter, the Working Families Party, and the Metro D.C. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. She has supported the defund police movement and introduced legislation to end MPD cooperation with ICE.
However, her campaign has not been without controversy. The New York Post reported that Lewis George was fined $16,000 by D.C.’s Office of Campaign Finance for improper coordination with an outside group and labor unions that spent $1 million supporting her. She is appealing the fine.
Additionally, the district faces a $1.1 billion budget deficit driven in part by federal layoffs under the second Trump administration, raising questions about how Lewis George will fund her ambitious spending proposals.
Analysis: A National Test Case
Lewis George’s expected mayoralty could become a high-profile test case for democratic socialist governance in a major U.S. city, following similar experiments in New York City under Mamdani. The outcome of any federal takeover attempt could set important legal and political precedents for D.C.’s unique status as a federal district without statehood.
Washingtonians remain tired of crime but skeptical of federal intervention, a tension that will define Lewis George’s tenure if she wins the general election.
What’s Next
With the primary decided, Lewis George will face a nominal Republican challenger in the November general election, which she is heavily favored to win. The new mayor is scheduled to take office in January 2027.
The key question remains whether Trump will follow through on his threat of federal takeover. If he does, it would represent an unprecedented federal intervention in local governance and could trigger a legal battle over the limits of the Home Rule Act.
For now, Washington, D.C. — a city of over 700,000 residents with no voting representation in Congress — braces for a new era of leadership that promises to be anything but quiet.
