Leuven Alcohol Checkpoint: Six Licenses Suspended in Major Operation

Leuven police conducted a large-scale alcohol checkpoint on Saturday evening, testing 1,126 drivers across three major access roads and resulting in six immediate license suspensions. The operation, which ran from 19:00 to 02:00 on the night of June 20-21, was part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and deter drunk driving in the Flemish university city.

According to VRT NWS, officers set up checkpoints on the Tiensesteenweg, Nieuwe Mechelsesteenweg, and Brusselsesteenweg — three major arterial routes connecting Leuven to surrounding municipalities.

Scale of the Operation

Of the 1,126 drivers tested, six immediately lost their licenses after testing positive for alcohol or drugs. An additional seven drivers received fines for excessive alcohol consumption below the immediate suspension threshold. The rate of approximately 0.53% of drivers caught with excessive alcohol is consistent with the 0.48% rate recorded during the 2024-2025 winter BOB campaign in the Leuven region, as reported by the Leuven Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Beyond alcohol violations, officers detected a range of other offenses. One driver had their license suspended for 15 days for using a mobile phone while driving. Police also issued citations for not wearing seatbelts, failing to carry insurance or registration documents, expired vehicle inspections, and driving with a provisional license during prohibited weekend night hours.

Vehicle Seizure and Drug Detection

One vehicle was seized and towed to the police impound after it was found to be unregistered, uninsured, and uninspected. The vehicle was also equipped with fake license plates — the driver had affixed a counterfeit registration seal from the Vehicle Registration Service to one of the plates in an attempt to make it appear legitimate.

A drug-sniffing dog was deployed during the operation, searching five vehicles. In three cases, small quantities of drugs were found and confiscated, with those involved receiving citations.

Broader Enforcement Context

The checkpoint is part of Belgium’s long-running BOB campaign, the national anti-drunk-driving initiative now in its third decade. The campaign intensifies enforcement during summer festival season — a period when alcohol-related driving incidents typically increase — with the summer 2026 edition featuring dedicated police checkpoints at major festivals across the country, including Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop, and Dour.

Leuven, home to KU Leuven — one of Europe’s oldest and largest universities — has a vibrant nightlife and large student population, making alcohol enforcement a particular priority for local authorities. The Leuven Public Prosecutor’s Office has maintained a strict enforcement policy since at least November 2024, with drivers who blow 0.8 promille (0.08% BAC) or higher facing immediate 15-day license suspension.

Significance

The operation demonstrates the integrated approach of Leuven police, combining alcohol testing, drug detection, vehicle documentation checks, and enforcement of other traffic violations in a single operation. The seizure of a vehicle with fake plates also highlights how routine traffic checkpoints can uncover broader criminal activity beyond traffic offenses.

As the summer BOB campaign continues, Leuven police have signaled that similar operations will follow, reinforcing the message that road safety remains a top priority in the region.
