Trump Unveils New Air Force One: A Converted Qatari Jet

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. — President Donald Trump unveiled a dramatically redesigned Air Force One on Friday, showcasing a converted Boeing 747 gifted by the government of Qatar that replaces one of the two aging presidential aircraft that have served the nation since 1990. The new jet, designated VC-25B Bridge, features a bold red, white, and navy blue color scheme and will serve as an interim “bridge” aircraft until two purpose-built Boeing 747-8s arrive, currently expected in 2028.

Speaking from inside a hangar at Joint Base Andrews before a crowd of Air Force personnel, Trump described the aircraft as a “flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody has ever seen before,” according to AP News. The president stepped off the new plane to the tune of “God Bless the USA” in a dramatic entrance that underscored the significance of the moment.

A Controversial Gift

The aircraft was formally accepted by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in May 2025 from the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, sparking immediate controversy. Under the U.S. Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause and federal ethics regulations, gifts from foreign governments valued over $50 require congressional approval. The Qatari jet has been valued at approximately $400 million — eight million times that legal limit.

Trump has defended the arrangement, saying it would be “stupid” to turn down the offer and that it saves taxpayer money. As The Guardian reported, the Pentagon stated that “the secretary of defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations.” Trump has said that after his term ends, the plane would be donated to a future presidential library.

A New Look for the Presidency

The new color scheme — navy blue underbelly, red stripe, and white upper body — represents a dramatic departure from the iconic robin’s egg blue and white design that has been a fixture since the Kennedy administration. The tail features a large American flag, while the presidential seal adorns the left side where the president boards.

Trump first pushed for this design during his first term, modeling it after his personal Boeing 757. President Joe Biden reversed the decision in March 2023 after an Air Force review suggested darker colors could increase costs and delay delivery. Upon returning to office, Trump reinstated his preferred design. “It was time for a change,” Trump said, according to NPR. “Everything was designed good. It was my taste.”

Why a “Bridge” Aircraft Was Needed

The U.S. government contracted Boeing to deliver two new 747-8 aircraft (VC-25Bs) to serve as the next-generation presidential fleet, but the program has been plagued by nearly a decade of delays. Originally scheduled for delivery in 2024, the new jets are now not expected until 2027 and 2028. Cost overruns have ballooned from $3.7 billion to $5 billion, driven by a critical subcontractor’s bankruptcy, difficulty retaining staff with high-level security clearances, and Boeing’s cessation of 747 production in 2023.

With one of the two aging VC-25A aircraft — tail number 29000 — making its final flight back from the G7 summit in France this week, the Qatari jet fills an urgent gap. Its companion aircraft, tail number 28000, will continue flying alongside the new jet until the VC-25Bs arrive.

Security and Capabilities

The Air Force has stated that the former Qatari jet “must meet rigorous security requirements” and was “modified under a disciplined engineering approach that prioritized these exact core capabilities above all else.” Much of the previous head of state interior layout was kept intact. The Air Force has estimated security modifications at less than $400 million, though lawmakers have suggested costs could approach $1 billion.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach praised the accelerated timeline, saying, “Many thought it could not be done, but the United States Air Force was able to execute and provide a secure, reliable airborne command post on an accelerated timeline.”

What’s Next

The new Air Force One has a busy schedule ahead. It is slated to lead the “biggest flyover in American history” for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations on July 4. Trump plans to take the jet to the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, in July, and has indicated a potential trip to China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November.

As Euronews noted, the aircraft’s arrival marks a significant milestone in presidential aviation — but also raises enduring questions about foreign influence, the Emoluments Clause, and what will ultimately become of the Qatari jet once Trump leaves office. For now, the VC-25B Bridge stands as a symbol of both presidential power and the unconventional path taken to secure it.
