McDonald’s Brings Back Fried Apple Pie for America’s 250th

McDonald’s is bringing back its original fried apple pie nationwide for a limited time starting June 23, 2026, reviving a menu item that has not been widely available in the United States for more than three decades. The return, timed to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, marks the first time the classic dessert will be sold at participating U.S. restaurants since it was replaced by a baked version in 1992.

Priced at $1.99 each or $2.99 for two, the pie features a “signature filling made with 100% American-grown apples, wrapped in the same golden crunch and flaky fried crust” fans remember, according to Fox Business.

A Tennessee Origin Story

The fried apple pie traces its roots to East Tennessee in the 1960s, where McDonald’s Owner/Operator Litton Cochran created a fried apple hand pie as a potential dessert for the chain. His wife, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe before it was introduced nationally in 1968 — the same year the Big Mac debuted.

“When Ray Kroc was trying to come up with a dessert for McDonald’s, my Grandad, Litton Cochran, suggested a Fried Apple Pie as a classic that people would love,” Eric Cochran, McDonald’s Owner/Operator and grandson of the original creators, said in a statement. “My Grandmom, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe. Bringing the Fried Apple Pie back for fans this summer to celebrate America’s 250th just feels right.”

According to The Commercial Appeal, the Cochran family owned 40 McDonald’s locations in East Tennessee, and the fried pie became a local favorite before McDonald’s adopted it as a national menu staple.

From Fried to Baked and Back Again

McDonald’s replaced the fried apple pie with a baked version in 1992, responding to growing consumer health consciousness about fat and cholesterol. The USDA also published its food guide pyramid that same year, reflecting a national shift toward healthier eating.

Interestingly, the baked version that replaced it contains 230 calories — 10 more than the fried version, according to McDonald’s. The fried pie remained available in Hawaii and continues to be sold in international markets including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Greece, Australia, and China.

A small but dedicated fan base has kept the dream of a nationwide return alive. A Facebook group called “Bring Back the Original McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie” has approximately 130 members, as reported by USA TODAY.

A 35-Foot Monument on Route 66

To mark the occasion, McDonald’s is erecting a 35-foot fried apple pie installation along Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, near the company’s Chicago headquarters. “The McDonald’s Largest Fried Apple Pie” will be on display from June 23 through July 4 at 920 N. Broadway Street.

A kickoff event on June 23 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. CT will feature live music, Coca-Cola, and complimentary Arch Cards. The giant pie is designed as a photo opportunity aimed at generating organic social media buzz during the summer travel season.

Patriotic Marketing and Nostalgia

McDonald’s is not alone in tying promotions to the semiquincentennial. Burger King is offering a Firecracker Cookie Pie, Sonic has a red, white, and blue slush float, and Hardee’s is selling an Iced Star-Spangled Biscuit. But McDonald’s move stands out for tapping into genuine consumer nostalgia for a product that has achieved near-legendary status among fast-food enthusiasts.

“There are certain things that just take you back — and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them,” Eric Cochran said. “It’s something that people love and remember from growing up.”

The limited-time offering, available while supplies last, coincides with summer travel and the World Cup, potentially maximizing customer traffic across McDonald’s approximately 13,500 U.S. restaurants.

What’s Next

McDonald’s has not announced a specific end date for the promotion beyond “limited time” and “while supplies last.” The question on many fans’ minds is whether strong demand could lead to a permanent return — or at least a recurring seasonal offering. For now, the fried apple pie is available all day at participating locations, giving customers a chance to rediscover a taste of Americana that has been missing from the menu for 34 years.

As McDonald’s itself put it in the announcement: “If you know, you know. If you don’t, June 23 is your chance to find out.”
