Two Fatal Accidents in Belgium: Hoboken and De Haan

Two separate fatal incidents have shaken Belgian communities on Monday, June 22, 2026. In Hoboken, an 18-year-old moped rider died after colliding with a train at a level crossing, while in De Haan, a 56-year-old man was found dead on the street after being struck by a vehicle. Police are investigating both cases, and a partner of the De Haan victim has been arrested for questioning.

Hoboken: Moped Rider Dies After Train Collision

The first incident occurred in the late afternoon at the Kapelstraat level crossing in Hoboken, a district of Antwerp. According to VRT NWS, the 18-year-old moped rider was struck by a train after reportedly riding through closed barriers. Infrabel, the Belgian railway infrastructure manager, confirmed that the barriers were functioning properly and were closed at the time of the accident.

The victim was initially critically injured and rushed to hospital, but died overnight from his injuries. Kato Belmans, spokesperson for the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office, confirmed the death, stating: “The 18-year-old reportedly rode his moped through a closed barrier. He has since died.”

The collision caused significant disruption to train services, with traffic halted for several hours in both directions between Antwerp-Zuid and Boom. NMBS, the Belgian National Railway Company, deployed replacement buses for affected passengers. Train services were restored by the evening, though residual delays continued.

De Haan: Hit-and-Run Leaves Man Dead; Partner Arrested

Later that evening, around 10 PM, a passerby discovered the body of a 56-year-old man from Antwerp lying on the Wenduinesteenweg in De Haan, a coastal municipality in West Flanders. The man had been struck by a vehicle, and no car was present at the scene. Emergency services arrived but could only confirm his death.

According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office appointed a traffic expert and a forensic doctor who arrived during the night to make initial findings. Due to the unusual circumstances, an investigating judge was also called in.

A major breakthrough came when the victim’s partner was arrested for questioning. She is believed to have been behind the wheel at the time of the incident. The couple, both market traders, had dined at a nearby restaurant shortly before the accident and had posted a photo on social media showing them smiling broadly.

“The victim was hit by a vehicle and died at the scene from his injuries. The circumstances are still unclear,” said Griet De Prest, spokesperson for the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office, as reported by HLN.

Café customers in the vicinity reported hearing a loud impact but saw nothing. The vehicle reportedly fled the scene after the collision.

Broader Safety Concerns

These two incidents, occurring on the same day, highlight ongoing safety challenges in Belgium. The Hoboken tragedy underscores the dangers at level crossings, where despite functioning barriers, user behavior can lead to fatal consequences. Infrabel has been working on awareness campaigns and infrastructure upgrades to improve rail crossing safety.

The De Haan case raises troubling questions about hit-and-run incidents and domestic circumstances. Under Belgian law, fleeing the scene of an accident carries significant legal penalties.

What’s Next

Police in both jurisdictions continue their investigations. In Hoboken, authorities are examining the precise circumstances of how the young moped rider came to bypass the closed barriers. In De Haan, the arrested partner remains in custody for questioning, and an autopsy is scheduled to shed light on the exact cause of death.

The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office has urged anyone with information about the Hoboken incident to come forward, while West Flanders investigators are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the Wenduinesteenweg area around 10 PM on Monday evening.
