EU-China Rail Freight Volume Surges 10.8-Fold in a Decade

The scale of China-Europe freight train services has expanded more than tenfold over the past decade, with annual trips rising from 1,702 in 2016 to 20,022 in 2025 — a 10.8-fold increase that underscores the rapid growth of overland trade routes between Asia and Europe, according to data released by China State Railway Group.

The milestone, announced on June 19, marks the 10th anniversary of the unified China-Europe Railway Express brand and reflects an average annual growth rate of 31.5% since the brand’s launch in 2016. Since 2020, annual operations have consistently exceeded 10,000 trips.

A Decade of Expansion

On June 8, 2016, China Railway officially launched the unified China-Europe freight train brand, with trains departing simultaneously from eight Chinese cities: Chongqing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Suzhou, Dongguan, and Yiwu. What began as a modest network has since grown into a sprawling logistics system that now connects 129 Chinese cities with 236 cities across 26 European countries — an addition of 113 Chinese cities and 216 European destinations compared with 2016, as iChongqing reported.

“The international logistics brand value of China-Europe freight trains has been widely recognized globally,” an official from the logistics center of China Railway told iChongqing. The official added that the trains “have provided momentum for Asia-Europe trade, China’s high-level opening-up, and the high-quality development of Belt and Road cooperation.”

Record-Breaking Performance in 2026

The momentum has continued into 2026. By June 10, the service had already surpassed 10,000 trips and transported more than 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), setting new records for the same period. In the first quarter alone, 5,460 train trips and 546,000 containers were transported, marking year-on-year increases of 29% and 22%, respectively, according to China Daily.

Cumulatively, by May 9, 2026, the China-Europe Railway Express had made 130,000 trips, with total cargo value exceeding $520 billion, People’s Daily reported. In 2025 alone, the value of goods transported reached $67.7 billion.

Network Reach and Efficiency Gains

The network’s geographic expansion has been matched by significant improvements in operational efficiency. Trains now run at 1,600 kilometers per day within China and 1,000 to 1,300 kilometers per day outside China — about one-third faster than traditional international railway transport. Transport prices have fallen by more than 40% compared with the early stages of operations.

A notable indicator of efficiency is the heavy-container rate, which has remained at 100% for 45 consecutive months as of May 2026, meaning every container is loaded with cargo rather than running empty. The ratio of return trips to outbound trips has exceeded 85%, reflecting improved balance in two-way trade flows.

Currently, 22 full-time-table trains operate weekly between nine Chinese cities and six European cities, reducing overall journey times compared with regular services.

Cargo Diversity and Route Diversification

The trains initially carried primarily mobile phones and computers but now transport more than 50,000 types of goods across 53 categories, including clothing, automobiles and parts, grain, wine, coffee beans, and timber. This diversification reflects the service’s maturation from a niche logistics option into a mainstream trade corridor.

Geopolitical considerations have also driven route diversification. The development of the Trans-Caspian corridor and southern routes has accelerated, reducing dependence on the northern corridor through Russia. Since May 2024, the Trans-Caspian route has operated daily services. Southern-route trains increased from fewer than 20 trips in 2023 to more than 450 in 2025, and from January to May 2026, 329 southern-route trains were operated — up 75% year-on-year.

Digital Transformation and Customs Efficiency

China Railway has invested heavily in digital infrastructure to support the network’s growth. A China-Europe freight train portal website was launched in 2023, providing customers with information inquiries and one-stop business services. Smart container yards have increased loading and unloading efficiency by more than 30%, while electronic seals enable full-route cargo tracking with alerts if containers are opened.

At border crossings, digital systems and streamlined customs procedures have reduced the shortest clearance time to under 30 minutes, significantly accelerating transit times.

Outlook

China Railway has stated it will continue to improve operating models, promote diversified routes, and strengthen domestic and overseas mechanisms related to transport, safety, and pricing, aiming to further enhance the brand value and international competitiveness of China-Europe freight trains.

As the network enters its second decade under the unified brand, the key challenges ahead include maintaining growth momentum amid geopolitical uncertainties, addressing questions about the role of government subsidies, and further improving the balance of two-way trade. The development of alternative routes via Central Asia and the Caspian Sea suggests an awareness of these vulnerabilities — and a strategy to address them.

For now, the numbers tell a compelling story: a rail network that carried 1,702 trains in its first year now moves more than 20,000 annually, transforming overland trade between the world’s two largest economic regions.
