Xi’an-Shiyan High-Speed Railway Opens, Taming the Qinlings

China has completed its first high-speed railway capable of traversing the formidable Qinling Mountains at 350 km/h, with the Xi’an-Shiyan line set to begin operations in late June 2026. The new railway, spanning approximately 256 kilometers through Shaanxi and Hubei provinces, will slash travel time between Xi’an and Wuhan from five hours to just two and a half, according to Xinhua News.

A Historic Engineering Feat

The Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway is a key component of China’s “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” national high-speed rail network, forming part of the Fuzhou-Yinchuan corridor. With over 94% of its route consisting of bridges and tunnels, the line represents one of the most challenging railway engineering projects ever undertaken in China, as China Daily reported.

The line connects seven stations: Xi’an East, Lantian, Shangluo West, Shanyang, Manchuanguan, Yunxi, and Shiyan East. Xi’an East Station, a major comprehensive transport hub in Northwest China, is designed to handle an estimated annual passenger throughput of 36.5 million, featuring multiple energy-saving facilities that emphasize green and low-carbon concepts.

Shangluo West Station: A New Landmark in the Qinling Heartland

Located in Yangyuhe Town, Shangzhou District, Shangluo City, the Shangluo West Station is a striking architectural achievement. Its roof undulates to echo the surrounding Qinling mountain peaks, while incorporating design elements inspired by Qin bricks, Han tiles, and the Chinese character “Shang” (商). The waiting hall features decorative motifs of the forsythia flower, Shangluo’s city flower. With a total building area of 19,998 square meters and a maximum capacity of 2,000 passengers, the station seamlessly blends natural landscape with cultural heritage into a modern transportation space.

Record-Breaking Bridge Engineering

A centerpiece of the project is the Hanjiang River Bridge, completed in April 2025. Spanning 917.45 meters with a main span of 420 meters, the bridge set three national records: the largest-span high-speed railway beam-truss composite cable-stayed bridge in China, the first kilometer-level steel truss beam with 2mm对接 precision, and the first 1,760 cubic meter超大 concrete悬浇量, as reported by Chutian Metropolis Daily.

Chief Engineer Pu Yinbo of China Railway 11th Bureau described the bridge deck平整度 of 1/1350, saying, “It’s like on a football-field-length bridge surface, the overall undulation doesn’t exceed the height of a suitcase.” The bridge’s construction also demonstrated extraordinary environmental stewardship, with 8 modified barges serving as mobile water treatment stations and a wastewater recycling system treating 200 tons daily to protect the Hanjiang River, which flows through the South-to-North Water Diversion Project’s core water source area.

Travel Time Revolution

Once operational, the railway will fundamentally reshape travel across central China. Xi’an to Shiyan will take approximately one hour, Xi’an to Xiangyang about two hours, and Xi’an to Wuhan just two and a half to three hours — down from the current five-hour journey. As Shaanxi Daily put it, “‘Morning Xi’an paomo, evening Wuhan hot dry noodles’ is no longer a dream.”

Economic and Tourism Impact

The economic implications are substantial. The railway strengthens connections between the Guanzhong Plain city cluster and the Middle Yangtze River city cluster, facilitating industrial collaboration between Xi’an’s optoelectronics and aerospace sectors and Shiyan’s automotive manufacturing base. Logistics efficiency for Shiyan auto parts transported to Xi’an is expected to increase by 40%, and annual tourism revenue along the route is projected to exceed 10 billion yuan.

Hubei destinations have already announced preferential policies for Shaanxi and Northwest tourists, including Wudang Mountain discounts, free access to scenic spots via “Qin-Chu Mutual Reliance” cards, and reciprocal benefits between Enshi and Hanzhong. The railway also passes through the Qinba Mountain area, one of China’s former concentrated poverty-stricken regions, providing new economic opportunities for local communities to bring agricultural products to national markets.

Testing and Timeline

The railway has undergone extensive testing. On May 12, 2026, the first full-line pull-through test was conducted with the DJ602 comprehensive inspection train running from Xi’an East to Shiyan East at design speed, as Guangming Online reported. Operational testing in the Shaanxi section began on May 29, 2026, with train 55302 departing Xi’an East Station. Full-line track-laying was completed on November 27, 2025.

What’s Next

With the railway now in its final pre-launch phase, attention turns to ticket pricing, long-term ridership projections, and the broader integration of the Xi’an-Wuhan high-speed corridor. The line represents more than a transportation upgrade — it is a strategic link binding Northwest and Central China closer together, supporting the Belt and Road Initiative, Yangtze River Economic Belt development, and Western Development Strategy. From the historical lament of “Clouds横 the Qinling, where is home?” to the new era chapter of “Natural barrier turned into thoroughfare,” the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway marks a transformative moment in China’s infrastructure story.
