Youth Footballer, 14, Assaulted by Adult Team; Bans Issued

A 14-year-old youth football player who recently represented China’s U15 national team was assaulted by adult players during an internal friendly match in Guangzhou on June 21, sparking widespread public outrage and coordinated disciplinary action from two provincial football associations. The Guangdong and Hunan Football Associations announced punishments on June 26 against multiple individuals involved in the incident, which left the young player, Zhang Haoye, with multiple contusions and a fractured finger.

The Incident

The altercation occurred during a closed-door friendly between the Guangdong Mingtu U16 youth team and the Hunan Zhangjiajie adult football team at the Guangdong Mingtu training ground in Guangzhou. What began as a verbal dispute between players escalated into physical violence, with multiple adult members of the Zhangjiajie team assaulting teenage players from Guangdong Mingtu.

The most seriously injured victim was Zhang Haoye, a 14-year-old who had been selected for the China U15 national team training camp in April 2026 and had recently traveled to Italy for the “Nations Cup” with the national team. According to medical reports, Zhang suffered multiple contusions, a fractured little finger, and reportedly a scrotal injury from stomping.

Club and Association Responses

In the early hours of June 22, the Guangdong Mingtu Club issued a forceful statement condemning the attack. “Personnel from the Zhangjiajie team maliciously assaulted our club’s minor and youth players, causing physical injuries and psychological trauma,” the club said, as reported by The Paper. The club vowed to pursue accountability through legal channels and stated it would “not accept any form of apology, mediation, or compromise.”

The Zhangjiajie Football Association confirmed on June 22 that police had launched an investigation into the incident, as reported by China News Service. The Hunan FA immediately suspended all involved individuals from participating in football activities within the province pending the investigation.

Punishments Handed Down

On the evening of June 26, both provincial football associations announced their disciplinary rulings simultaneously.

Guangdong FA Penalties:

  • Huang Haiwen, the match organizer, received the harshest penalty: a three-year ban from all football-related work and operations in Guangdong (2026–2029)
  • Qin Jiexian (on-site coach/interpreter) and Huang Junfeng (team leader) of Guangdong Mingtu U16 were suspended from matches for six months
  • Guangdong Mingtu FC was ordered to submit a self-criticism and was publicly criticized
  • Two Guangdong Mingtu U16 players involved in the conflict were ordered to submit self-criticisms

Hunan FA Penalties:

  • Li Lixing, Zhangjiajie player #11, received the longest player suspension: 12 months (2026–2027)
  • Three Zhangjiajie players — Zhang Shuai, Cao Zhi, and Han Peijiang — were suspended for six months
  • Team leader Chen Na, interpreter Liu Xinyi, and on-site coach Shi Haijun were each suspended for six months
  • The Zhangjiajie Football Team and the Zhangjiajie Football Association were both ordered to submit self-criticisms and were publicly criticized

Broader Context and Concerns

The incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols in Chinese grassroots football. The match pitted an adult amateur team — composed largely of players who had been eliminated from professional youth academies — against a U16 youth squad, creating a dangerous physical mismatch.

This case is part of a troubling pattern. In late 2025 and early 2026, multiple provinces reported serious disciplinary violations in amateur leagues, including players attacking referees and violent confrontations, as documented by Phoenix News. The rapid expansion of provincial “Super Leagues” across China has outpaced the development of adequate governance and disciplinary frameworks.

Questions Over Criminal Accountability

A significant question remains whether the football association punishments — suspensions and bans — are sufficient. Public commentators have questioned why criminal charges have not been filed, given that the victim is a minor who suffered fractures. One comment on Phoenix News noted: “Using internal punishment to replace criminal punishment — a typical practice of indulging criminal gangs.”

The Guangdong Mingtu Club stated it would pursue legal avenues, and police confirmed they were investigating as of June 22. Whether criminal proceedings will follow the industry sanctions remains an open question.

What to Watch For

The Chinese Football Association has not yet announced any national-level sanctions. The outcome of the police investigation and any potential criminal charges will be closely watched, as will whether this incident prompts reforms to safety protocols for adult-versus-youth friendly matches. For Zhang Haoye, the young national team prospect at the center of the incident, his recovery and return to football remain the priority.
