Red Lions Secure Olympic Ticket with Pro League Victory

Belgium’s Red Lions have secured their place at the LA28 Olympic Games after defeating the Netherlands 2-1 to clinch the FIH Hockey Pro League 2025-26 title. The victory on Saturday at the new Hockey Arena in Wavre makes the Red Lions the first Belgian sports team — across all disciplines — to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympics, and the first men’s hockey side (alongside host nation USA) to book their ticket to the 12-team tournament.

A Dominant Campaign

The Red Lions finished top of the nine-team Pro League with 39 points from 15 matches, recording 12 wins, two draws and just one defeat — a remarkable record that underlines their status as one of the world’s premier hockey nations. England finished second with 34 points, followed by Australia on 30 points.

According to Sporza, the victory was built on an explosive start. Alexander Hendrickx opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 15th minute, and Tom Boon doubled the lead with a field goal just two minutes into the second quarter. The Netherlands pulled one back through Tijmen Reyenga’s penalty corner in the 36th minute, but goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch — named Man of the Match — produced a series of crucial saves, including a vital stop in the 53rd minute with a Dutch player through on goal.

Second Pro League Title

This is Belgium’s second Pro League crown, following their 2021 triumph in a COVID-affected edition. The 2025-26 title carries even greater significance, as the FIH Hockey Pro League champions for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons receive direct Olympic qualification under the current pathway approved by the International Olympic Committee.

FIH President Tayyab Ikram offered his congratulations in an official statement, saying: “Winning the Pro League against the competitive field is an incredible feat by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions. By stamping their ticket to the LA28 Olympic Games in such fashionable style, the Red Lions have proven once again why they remain one of the best-regarded sides in men’s hockey.”

Player Reactions

Vanasch, the veteran goalkeeper nicknamed “The Wall,” was characteristically modest after the match. “It’s fantastic. It’s not about me though, this was a team performance. We worked hard for this,” he told Sporza. “That we can now go to LA is absolutely crazy.”

Arthur Van Doren, the multiple-time world player of the year, emphasized the strategic advantage of early qualification. “The advantage of this Olympic ticket is that we can now plan ahead more than other countries. That puts us in the driver’s seat and that’s nice for the young guys,” he said in a follow-up interview.

Hendrickx, while celebrating the achievement, urged caution about labeling the team as World Cup favorites. “Forcing the favorite label on us is a bit premature. On the other hand, we win the Pro League with one match to go. We beat the Netherlands twice and aside from the loss to Australia, we’re undefeated,” he noted.

Olympic Pedigree

The Red Lions have now qualified for six consecutive Olympic tournaments since returning to the Games in Beijing 2008 after a 32-year absence. Their recent Olympic record is exceptional: silver at Rio 2016 and gold at Tokyo 2020, where they defeated Australia in the final. The LA28 Games will mark their 17th Olympic appearance overall.

What’s Next

The immediate focus shifts to the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands in August 2026. With the Olympic ticket secured, the Red Lions can approach the tournament with reduced pressure, though Hendrickx warned that “a loss against Australia in, for example, the quarterfinals or semifinals can be fatal at the World Cup.”

Belgium faces Australia on Sunday in their final Pro League match of the season, with an official trophy presentation ceremony planned for the occasion at the Hockey Arena in Wavre. The remaining Olympic qualification spots will be filled through the 2026-27 Pro League season, Continental Championships, and Olympic Qualifiers.

As reported by La Libre Belgique, the Red Lions’ achievement marks the sixth consecutive Olympic qualification for the team — a testament to the sustained excellence of Belgian hockey at the highest level.
