Body of 16-Year-Old Found in Vilvoorde, Autopsy Scheduled

The body of a 16-year-old boy was discovered on Monday evening along the Brusselsesteenweg in Vilvoorde, Belgium, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death, according to Het Laatste Nieuws.

Discovery and Initial Response

The teenager’s body was found at the intersection of the Brusselsesteenweg and the connecting road to the Vuurkruisenlaan, near the Drie Fonteinen sports domain and park. The fire brigade was dispatched to the scene and placed a tent and tarp to screen the discovery site from public view.

The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office was immediately notified. A forensic doctor and the judicial laboratory were both assigned to conduct initial on-site examinations, as RingTV reported. The local police zone VIMA (Vilvoorde-Machelen) cordoned off the area for the investigation.

Cause of Death Unknown

Speaking on behalf of the prosecutor’s office, spokesperson Mélanie Geeraerts stated that the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear.

“The cause of death is not known at this time,” Geeraerts said. “On Wednesday, an internal autopsy and toxicological examination will be performed. No further communication will be possible in this case until Wednesday.”

The autopsy and toxicological tests, scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, are expected to provide critical information about how the teenager died. The toxicological examination suggests authorities are considering a range of possibilities, including the potential involvement of substances.

Context and Community Impact

The discovery site near Domein Drie Fonteinen — a large park and sports complex in Vilvoorde — is a busy area along a major thoroughfare connecting Brussels to the city of Vilvoorde, which has a population of approximately 45,000.

Notably, the same location was the scene of a violent incident in December 2024, when an 18-year-old man was found stabbed and abandoned in Domein Drie Fonteinen. He was seriously wounded but survived, and the case was investigated as attempted murder by the Halle-Vilvoorde prosecutor’s office and the VIMA police zone.

The death of a minor in a public area has drawn significant public attention. The story was the most-read and most-shared article on HLN’s Vilvoorde section at the time of reporting, reflecting community concern and anxiety about safety in the area.

What Happens Next

The investigation remains in its early stages. Key developments to watch include:

  • Autopsy results scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, which will likely determine the cause of death
  • Toxicological analysis, which may take additional time to complete
  • Further statements from the Halle-Vilvoorde prosecutor’s office, expected after the autopsy
  • Potential identification of the victim, pending family notification and official confirmation

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim, and no suspects or persons of interest have been named at this stage. The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office continues to lead the investigation.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
