Bpost Adds Home Alarm Systems to Post Office Services
Belgian postal service Bpost announced on Wednesday that it is adding home alarm systems to its post office offerings, partnering with Swedish security company Verisure to sell monitored home security solutions across its 655-location network. The move marks the latest step in Bpost’s transformation from a traditional postal operator into a multi-service “local service center” offering banking, telecommunications, and now home security alongside postal services.
Starting July 1, customers can request Verisure security services at 50 initial post office locations, with a full rollout to all 655 post offices scheduled by the end of September. Post office counter staff will be trained to assess home security needs and offer discounts on installation fees, according to the Bnode press office.
A Natural Extension of Services
“For Bpost, home security is a natural extension of the services we already offer, such as our moving service and our mail hold service, which customers can request when relocating or when they are away from home for an extended period,” said Tina Hernalsteen, Director Retail & Banking at Bpost. “In this way, Bpost aims to remain a supportive partner for people during key moments in their lives.”
The partnership addresses a pressing security concern in Belgium. Vincent Rousseau, Managing Director at Verisure, noted that 45,421 burglaries were recorded in Belgium in 2024 — nearly one every 12 minutes. “But protecting a home is about more than preventing intrusions,” Rousseau said. “Fires, domestic accidents and other emergency situations are also among the risks families may face. Through Bpost’s extensive local network, we want to make security more accessible.”
Verisure is the Belgian market leader in monitored alarm systems, serving 6.3 million customers worldwide with 13 branches across Brussels, Flanders, and Wallonia. The partnership gives Verisure access to Bpost’s extensive physical retail footprint, significantly expanding its points of sale.
From Post Office to Service Hub
Bpost’s expansion into home security follows a clear strategic pattern. The company has been systematically adding services to its post offices as traditional mail volumes decline due to digitalization. In 2020, Bpost signed a contract with American Ria Money Transfer for international money transfers. Following the integration of bpost bank into BNP Paribas Fortis in 2023-2024, post offices began offering daily banking services. A partnership with Nickel, a BNP Paribas subsidiary, brought payment accounts and cards. Most recently, on June 1, 2026, Bpost announced a partnership with DIGI to offer mobile and internet subscriptions.
As Het Laatste Nieuws reported, Bpost wants to turn its post offices into “local service centers that are close to every citizen,” particularly as banks and other service providers close physical branches due to digitalization. A Bpost spokesperson has also indicated interest in adding energy services in the future.
This strategy builds on a broader corporate restructuring. In December 2025, bpostgroup rebranded as Bnode, with three business units: Bpost (last-mile delivery in Benelux), Paxon (3PL logistics), and Landmark Global (cross-border). The Bpost brand was retained for postal and retail services.
Social Impact and Concerns
The service expansion particularly benefits elderly and less digitally-connected citizens who rely on in-person services, as post offices are often the last remaining physical service point in smaller towns and municipalities. Counter staff receive training on new services, potentially upskilling the workforce.
However, the expansion has also drawn scrutiny. Commenters on HLN raised concerns about Bpost receiving government subsidies — approximately €120 million — while expanding commercial services, potentially creating unfair competition with private businesses. Questions also remain about how many services a post office can reasonably offer without compromising its core postal function, and whether staff can adequately handle specialized fields like home security assessment.
What’s Next
With banking, telecom, and now home security added to its portfolio, Bpost is positioning itself as a one-stop destination for essential services. The company has hinted at further expansion into energy services, which would complete a remarkable transformation from mail carrier to community service hub. The success of this strategy will depend on whether Bpost can balance its public service obligations with its growing commercial ambitions — and whether the model proves sustainable as Belgium’s retail landscape continues to evolve.
As Post & Parcel noted, the partnership represents a significant milestone in Bpost’s ongoing evolution, demonstrating how traditional postal operators can reinvent themselves for the digital age by leveraging their most valuable asset: physical proximity to every citizen.
