China’s National Railway Rolls Out New Train Schedule

China’s national railway system implemented a major new train schedule on July 1, 2026, introducing 12,174 scheduled passenger trains and 23,975 freight trains across the network — increases of 106 and 111 respectively. The adjustment, announced by the China State Railway Group, coincides with the start of the summer travel season and the opening of a critical new high-speed rail link between Xi’an and Shiyan.

New Infrastructure Opens Doors

The schedule change is anchored by the inauguration of the Xi’an East to Shiyan East section of the Wuhan-Xi’an High-Speed Railway (西十高铁), a 255.7-kilometer line designed for 350 km/h operations. This new segment “cuts the corner” on the route between Xi’an and Wuhan, eliminating the need to travel via Zhengzhou and slashing travel times dramatically. According to Xinhua News, the shortest travel time from Xi’an East to Hankou in Wuhan is now just 2 hours 41 minutes — a reduction of 1 hour 1 minute — while the Xi’an East to Guangzhou South route has been shortened to 6 hours 53 minutes.

The newly opened Xi’an East Station is now handling 54 high-speed trains previously operating from Xi’an North Station to destinations including Chengdu, Yan’an, and Yinchuan. An additional 53 regular-speed passenger trains on the Xi’an-Ankang railway now stop at Xi’an East, significantly expanding the station’s role as a major transport hub.

Historic Firsts for Underserved Regions

The new schedule brings high-speed rail to Shangluo (商洛), a revolutionary base area in Shaanxi province, for the first time. Two trains now run from Shangluo West to Beijing West, opening up new connectivity for the region. In a symbolic move, Shaoshan South in Hunan — the birthplace of Mao Zedong — and Yan’an in Shaanxi — the revolutionary capital — are now connected by high-speed rail for the first time, linking two of China’s most significant red tourism destinations.

Upgraded Services and Faster Journeys

The railway operator has upgraded 16 regular-speed passenger trains on the Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Shanghai, and Longhai lines, with 14 Z-class and T-class trains converted to faster D-class (high-speed) trains. Beijing to Urumqi now sees its first D-class high-speed train service. The improvements yield substantial time savings: the Chengdu East to Beijing West route has been compressed by 8 hours 9 minutes, and the Urumqi to Chongqing West journey is now 2 hours 26 minutes shorter.

As CCTV News reported, additional peak-hour commuter services have been added in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Greater Bay Area. The Beijing West to Liangxiang suburban line now operates 26 trains per day, with 14 new services added.

Freight and Logistics Expansion

On the freight side, the new schedule includes 527 cross-railway-group freight trains — 22 more than before. China-Europe freight train routes have increased to 96, and China-Central Asia routes to 65, with three additional routes added to each network. These expansions support the Belt and Road Initiative and aim to reduce logistics costs across the country, as detailed in the Chinese government’s official announcement.

Passenger Experience Innovations

The schedule rollout also brings service improvements designed to enhance the passenger experience. The “silent carriage” service has been expanded to over 8,000 high-speed trains, while a “pet travel” service now covers 131 stations and 300 trains. Online meal ordering is available at 94 stations, and 120 stations offer seamless transfers for connecting tickets. Fifty stations now provide direct subway access without additional security checks.

Customized themed trains — including dedicated services for sports fans, concert-goers, and study tours — are being introduced to boost tourism and cultural consumption along railway corridors.

Strategic Implications

This July 2026 schedule adjustment represents more than a routine update. It reflects China’s continued investment in high-speed rail infrastructure and its strategic priorities: strengthening economic integration between the Northwest and Central-South regions, supporting domestic tourism, and enhancing international freight connectivity. The integration of new stations, upgraded rolling stock, and expanded freight capacity signals the railway’s role as a backbone of China’s domestic circulation strategy and its broader economic development goals.

Tickets for the new schedule went on sale from June 17 via the railway’s 12306 and 95306 platforms, as well as through WeChat and other channels. Passengers and freight customers are advised to check updated schedules through official channels as the summer travel season gets underway.
