Hong Kong High-Speed Rail Adds Three New Mainland Routes

Hong Kong’s high-speed rail network expanded its reach on July 1, 2026, adding three new direct connections to mainland Chinese cities and bringing the total number of destinations accessible from West Kowloon Station to 113. The expansion, which coincides with the nationwide railway schedule adjustment, further integrates Hong Kong with the national high-speed rail network and is expected to boost travel, trade, and economic ties between the Special Administrative Region and the mainland.

New Routes and Connections

The three newly added stations are Guangzhou North (广州北), Yiwu (义乌), and Fuqing West (福清西), according to CCTV News. Tickets for the new routes went on sale on June 17, 2026, ahead of the July 1 operational date.

Guangzhou North has been added as a stop on G6080/G6079 trains running between West Kowloon and Zhangjiajie West, as well as on the G903 service from Tianjin West to West Kowloon. Yiwu is now a stop on the G896/G895 sleeper trains between West Kowloon and Shanghai Hongqiao, marking the first-ever high-speed sleeper train service connecting Hong Kong to the city. Fuqing West has been added to the G924/G923 trains running between West Kowloon and Fuzhou.

Strategic Significance of Each New Station

The MTR Corporation highlighted the unique advantages of each new destination. As reported by the 21st Century Business Herald, Guangzhou North Station serves as a regional transportation hub connecting metro and intercity railways, with proximity to Baiyun International Airport and the Guangzhou Sunac Cultural Tourism City, making it an attractive gateway for both business and leisure travelers.

Yiwu, widely known as the “World’s Supermarket” and a globally renowned small commodities distribution center, gains its first direct high-speed sleeper train connection to Hong Kong. A relevant official quoted by CCTV News explained that the addition of Yiwu Station is “primarily to closely link Yiwu’s globally renowned small commodities distribution center advantages with Hong Kong’s international trade advantages, further smoothing connectivity between the Yangtze River Delta region and Hong Kong.”

Fuqing, located in Fujian province, is a major hometown for overseas Chinese and a key node on the Maritime Silk Road. The city boasts attractions including Lingshi Mountain National Forest Park and the Nanchan Temple ruins, offering significant tourism potential.

Growing Network and Record Ridership

The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Rail Hong Kong section began service on September 23, 2018, connecting to a national high-speed rail network that now spans over 50,000 kilometers. According to the MTR Corporation, the network has experienced remarkable growth in demand. In 2025, the Hong Kong section carried over 30 million passengers, with cumulative ridership exceeding 100 million since its opening.

This latest expansion follows a previous enlargement on January 26, 2026, when 16 new stations were added, bringing the total from 94 to 110. The steady growth reflects deepening integration between Hong Kong and the mainland’s transportation infrastructure.

Broader Economic Implications

The expansion supports the national strategy of integrating Hong Kong more deeply into the Greater Bay Area initiative and the broader national development framework. Improved rail connectivity strengthens Hong Kong’s role as a “super-connector” between mainland China and global markets, facilitating business travel, tourism, and trade.

The timing of the expansion, taking effect on July 1, carries symbolic significance as it coincides with the anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China. The Wen Wei Po reported that the new routes are expected to further enhance people-to-people exchanges and economic cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland.

What to Watch

With 113 destinations now accessible from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, the high-speed rail network covers a vast majority of China’s major cities. The MTR Corporation has indicated it will continue to optimize cross-border railway services. Travelers can also take advantage of a limited-time promotional offer through August 31, 2026, where passengers holding G6080 tickets to Guangzhou North and tickets for the Guangzhou Hot Snow Miracle can receive a free ticket for the Guangzhou Sunac International Circus. The continued expansion raises the question of which cities might be added next as Hong Kong’s rail connectivity deepens.
