Overnight High-Speed Rail Links Hong Kong to Yiwu

A new overnight high-speed sleeper train has begun operating between Hong Kong and Yiwu, the global small commodities hub known as the “World Supermarket,” offering business travelers and tourists an evening-departure, morning-arrival service that cuts travel time and eliminates the need for transfers.

The G896 sleeper train departed Hong Kong West Kowloon Station on the evening of July 1, arriving at Yiwu Station in Zhejiang Province in the early hours of the following morning, according to CCTV News. The return service, G895, departs Yiwu in the late evening and arrives in Hong Kong the next morning.

The launch is part of China’s broader third-quarter railway schedule adjustment, which took effect on July 1. The MTR-operated Hong Kong section of the high-speed rail network added three new stations — Guangzhou North, Yiwu, and Fuqing West — expanding Hong Kong West Kowloon’s direct reach to 113 destinations across 19 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities.

Bridging the Yangtze River Delta and Greater Bay Area

Yiwu, located in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, is the world’s largest wholesale market for small commodities, attracting buyers from over 200 countries and regions. Hong Kong businesspeople have long traveled between the two cities for procurement and trade negotiations.

According to the China News Service, adding Yiwu as a stop on the G895/G896 route marks the first time the city has had direct high-speed sleeper train service to and from Hong Kong. A relevant official told CE.cn that the move is aimed at “closely linking Yiwu’s advantages as a globally renowned small commodities distribution center with Hong Kong’s international trade advantages, further smoothing connectivity between the Yangtze River Delta region and Hong Kong.”

Previously, travelers from Hong Kong to Yiwu had to fly or transfer via another high-speed rail hub, consuming most of a full day. The overnight sleeper service preserves daytime hours for business, making it a game-changer for frequent travelers.

Strong Demand and Competitive Pricing

Demand for the new service has been immediate. On July 1, all tickets for the Hong Kong West Kowloon-Yiwu route were sold out on the 12306 railway platform. Round-trip sleeper tickets are offered at a 40% discount, with upper berths priced at 900 yuan (approximately $124) and lower berths at 1,020 yuan (approximately $140), making the service competitive with air travel.

Booming Cross-Border Traffic

The new connection comes amid surging demand for cross-border rail travel. In the first half of 2026, the West Kowloon checkpoint processed over 16.8 million passengers, a 14.4% increase year-on-year, with a single-day peak of 149,000 passengers. Up to 121 pairs of trains now operate daily on the Hong Kong high-speed rail network.

During the summer travel season, West Kowloon Station is expected to process over 6.8 million passengers, driven by family trips, study tours, and overseas sports event tourism, according to border inspection official Jiang Jiang.

Economic Ripple Effects

The trade data underscores the economic significance of the new link. From January to May 2026, Yiwu exported 14.3 billion yuan to Hong Kong, a 13.9% increase year-on-year, led by electromechanical products, food, and cultural products.

Yiwu International Trade Market operator Tao Juying, who registered her trademark in Hong Kong back in 2019, told CCTV that the direct sleeper train “can build a more convenient bridge for entering the Hong Kong market and expanding global channels.” Fellow trader Zhang Jiying, who attends Hong Kong trade fairs twice yearly, is already planning her October trip using the new service.

What’s Next

The expansion of Hong Kong’s high-speed rail network to 113 destinations reflects the deepening integration of the city into China’s national rail system since the Express Rail Link opened in September 2018. With ticket demand outstripping supply on the first day and trade between Yiwu and Hong Kong growing steadily, the overnight sleeper service is poised to become a vital artery for commerce and travel between two of China’s most dynamic economic regions.
