Drug Checks at Rock Werchter Entrance Net Cannabis, Cocaine

Belgian police have introduced a new drug enforcement strategy at the 2026 edition of Rock Werchter, one of the country’s largest music festivals, conducting checks on festivalgoers as they arrive at the main camping area rather than waiting until they are on the festival grounds. According to VRT NWS, the approach is designed to intercept illegal substances before they enter the festival ecosystem.

New Strategy at Camping The Hive

Instead of conducting drug checks primarily on and around the festival grounds as in previous years, officers are now stopping festivalgoers upon arrival at Camping The Hive, the main camping area. Police chief Karen Plasschaert of the Boortmeerbeek-Haacht-Keerbergen police zone explained that the change was prompted by the realisation that once on site, visitors could hide or stash drugs in multiple locations, making traditional checks less effective.

“At the moment of entry, the festivalgoer, their luggage and their vehicle are all in one location. That makes it much easier for us to find any drugs,” Plasschaert said.

Early Results

The first checks, conducted on Wednesday July 1, have already yielded results. Police reported seizing cannabis, cocaine and ketamine from several festivalgoers. According to Plasschaert, the checks ran smoothly and the response from attendees was largely positive.

Those caught with drugs face consequences depending on the quantity found. Small amounts intended for personal use result in an immediate fine, while larger quantities lead to a formal police report and criminal prosecution.

Sending a Clear Signal

Rock Werchter has traditionally had a less pronounced drug reputation compared to festivals like Tomorrowland. However, Plasschaert emphasised that a strict approach remains necessary. “Drug use is a societal problem that is not limited to festivals,” she said. “Even though Rock Werchter has a less pronounced drug reputation, that does not mean we can scale back our checks. We continue to focus on this to guarantee safety at and around the festival.”

The police stated that the operation is intended not only to intercept drugs but also to send a clear message: illegal substances will not be tolerated at or around the festival.

What to Watch For

As Rock Werchter continues through the weekend, authorities are expected to maintain the heightened checks at the camping entrance. The new approach could set a precedent for drug enforcement at other major Belgian festivals if deemed successful.
