Empire State Building Climbers May Have Had Inside Help

Two Russian-born daredevils who illegally scaled the Empire State Building’s 1,454-foot spire on Wednesday — unfurling a pro-peace banner and getting engaged at the top — may have had inside help, security experts say, as the NYPD investigates how the couple bypassed the iconic skyscraper’s defenses.

Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, were arraigned Thursday in Lower Manhattan on charges including reckless endangerment, burglary, and criminal mischief. They were released under supervision pending their next court appearance on August 24, according to NBC News.

How the Breach Unfolded

Investigators believe the couple entered the Empire State Building on the night of June 30 and hid there overnight. At approximately 5 a.m. on July 1, security cameras captured them accessing a maintenance hatch on the 102nd-floor observation deck. Sources say they used tools to loosen brackets and broke a lock on a 104th-floor security door to reach the broadcasting antenna area, as reported by ABC7 New York.

A visitor from South Wales told investigators she saw the couple open a metal door inside the observation tower. “I didn’t see if it was locked, I just seen them open the door and hurry up,” she said. “I assumed that they worked there so nobody stopped them.”

Security Experts Sound the Alarm

Greg Sanfilippo, a former NYPD sergeant now serving as vice president of Doyle Security Services, called the breach “quite disturbing.”

“This is every corporate real estate’s security team’s worst nightmare, getting access to the roof or ledges of their building,” Sanfilippo told ABC7 New York. “They didn’t just stumble upon that hatch; there is what we’d call pre-observational surveillance, someone cased the joint.”

Sanfilippo emphasized that the incident could have been far more dangerous. “It could’ve been a lot worse, had they had any bad intentions.”

The breach occurred during a period of heightened security in New York City, with events surrounding the 250th anniversary of America and the World Cup underway.

The Couple and Their Stunt

Nikolau and Kuznetsov, originally from Moscow and now living in East Orange, New Jersey, are well-known in the world of extreme “rooftopping.” Their exploits were profiled in the 2024 Netflix documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Atop the spire, the couple unfurled a banner reading: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” Kuznetsov then proposed to Nikolau, and the two kissed as helicopters circled overhead. NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit scaled the spire to bring them down, and bodycam footage released by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch captured the tense moments of their arrest.

“As for what I would call the harrowing body camera video that we released last night, recorded by the officers responding to that stunt, it really can take your breath away,” Tisch said, according to ABC7 New York.

The couple’s defense attorney, Jason Krinsky, argued that prosecutors had “overcharged” the case, noting that the Empire State Building’s own management stated there was “at no time danger to tenants, visitors, and guests.” The building’s social media account even leaned into the incident, posting that it offers “a practical way for the most memorable marriage proposals.”

However, the New York Post reported that the couple faces multiple charges including burglary, criminal mischief, and possession of burglar’s tools. Kuznetsov told detectives he “had to do something special for his engagement,” according to the criminal complaint.

Adding a twist to the story, Nikolau’s father — a Russian circus artist — told ABC News that the couple is already married and that the stunt was part of a performance.

What’s Next

The NYPD investigation remains ongoing, with detectives examining whether the couple conducted prior scouting visits to the building or received assistance from someone on the inside. Other landmarks are likely reviewing their security protocols in the wake of the incident.

The couple’s next court date is scheduled for August 24, 2026, at which point further details about the investigation may emerge.
