Newborns to Get Freedom 250 Social Security Cards, SSA Says
Babies born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026, will receive limited-edition Social Security cards featuring the “Freedom 250” logo to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, the Social Security Administration announced on Wednesday. The commemorative cards, issued at no additional cost to families or taxpayers, mark the first time the SSA has produced a special-edition Social Security card.
How the Program Works
The commemorative cards will be issued through the SSA’s existing Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, which has allowed parents to request a Social Security number during the birth registration process since 1987. Parents do not need to submit any additional paperwork or fees to receive the special design. The cards will feature the official Freedom 250 logo in black ink but will function identically to a standard Social Security card.
According to NBC News, the limited-edition cards are available exclusively to infants born during the six-month qualifying window. Replacement and duplicate cards ordered during this period will not carry the Freedom 250 logo, the agency confirmed.
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement: “Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago. The next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo.”
More than 3.5 million children are born in the United States each year, meaning millions of families could receive the commemorative card during the six-month rollout, according to Fox News, which first reported the initiative.
Scam Warning Issued
The SSA proactively warned the public about potential fraud surrounding the commemorative cards. The agency emphasized that it will never call, text, or email individuals requesting payment to obtain a commemorative card. Parents do not need to register or provide information beyond what is already collected through the standard birth registration process.
Part of a Broader Pattern
The commemorative Social Security cards are the latest in a series of Trump administration initiatives tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary. In April, the State Department announced that Americans could obtain limited-edition passports featuring President Donald Trump’s image on the inside cover. The administration has also launched Trump Accounts, tax-advantaged investment accounts for children, and organized the Great American State Fair on the National Mall.
These initiatives fall under Freedom 250, a separate entity created by the Trump administration in fall 2025 that operates as a limited liability corporation wholly owned by the National Park Foundation. Freedom 250 was established after the administration faced pushback in its efforts to control America250, a bipartisan commission created by Congress in 2016 to plan the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations.
Political Controversy
The SSA announcement coincided with the release of a House Democratic interim staff report alleging potential fraud by Trump-linked fundraisers against America250. According to the Associated Press, the report claims that donors intending to contribute to America250 were instead given banking and routing numbers for Freedom 250, a practice that could constitute wire fraud.
The report also alleges that corporate donors were pressured to withdraw commitments from America250 and shift their financial backing to the Trump-backed entity. Freedom 250 has dismissed the allegations as a “partisan smear.”
Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, said: “I’m old enough to remember the bicentennial in 1976. No one cared about party labels or political agendas, religious agendas or anything else. Donald Trump stole that. He took this unifying America250 moment, and he made it all about himself.”
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez responded: “Freedom 250 remains fully committed to uniting Americans at this historic moment and giving all Americans a spectacular birthday they can be proud of — and we won’t be distracted by those rooting for it to fail.”
What’s Next
The commemorative Social Security cards are available immediately for newborns through December 31, 2026. The nation’s official 250th birthday celebrations culminate this weekend with the planned “Salute to America” fireworks event on July 4, featuring a speech by President Trump. Meanwhile, the House Democratic investigation into Freedom 250’s fundraising practices is expected to continue, raising questions about how the nation’s anniversary has become a partisan flashpoint.
