China’s Type 076 Sichuan Installs Electromagnetic Catapult

China’s newest amphibious assault ship, the Type 076 Sichuan, has reached a critical milestone with the installation of its electromagnetic catapult and arrestor gear system, signaling that the vessel is approaching completion and preparing for sea trials. The development, reported by CCTV News via The Paper on July 5, 2026, marks the first public appearance of the ship since its deck was painted with markings.

A World-First in Warship Design

The Sichuan — launched on December 27, 2024, at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai with hull number 51 — is the world’s first amphibious assault ship equipped with electromagnetic catapult and arresting technology. According to Global Times, military expert Zhang Junshe described it as “the world’s first amphibious assault ship equipped with electromagnetic launching technology,” meaning it can carry not only helicopters but also fighter aircraft like the J-15.

With a full-load displacement exceeding 40,000 tons (approximately 44,000 tons), the Sichuan ranks among the largest amphibious assault ships globally. It measures 263 meters in length with a beam of 43 meters, placing it in a class comparable to the United States’ America-class amphibious assault ships.

Dual-Island Design and Electromagnetic Launch System

The Sichuan features a distinctive dual-island superstructure — a design that separates navigation and fleet coordination functions in the forward island from aviation control in the aft island, which manages drones, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft. This architectural innovation, detailed by IT Home, enables more efficient flight deck operations.

The ship’s electromagnetic catapult technology, derived from China’s aircraft carrier Fujian (Type 003), represents a generational leap. Military expert Cao Weidong told CCTV via NetEase that the catapult has been “flexibly adjusted in power output according to amphibious warfare needs,” with launching more drones identified as its primary specialty.

Aircraft Capabilities and Drone Warfare

The Sichuan is expected to carry and launch a diverse range of aircraft, including:

  • J-15 fighter aircraft
  • J-35 stealth fighter (30-ton class)
  • KJ-600 fixed-wing early warning aircraft
  • GJ-11 (Attack-11) stealth combat drones
  • Various helicopters and amphibious equipment

According to Xinhua, military expert Zhang Junshe emphasized that the ship’s electromagnetic track “can easily launch 30-ton-class J-35 stealth fighters and KJ-600 fixed-wing early warning aircraft.” More significantly, he noted that the vessel “can continuously launch stealth drones like dumplings in a pot,” describing this drone swarm tactic as the potential “trump card” of the Type 076.

Strategic Implications

The Sichuan effectively blurs the line between amphibious assault ship and light aircraft carrier. Military expert Song Zhongping told Global Times that the vessel “is almost a light aircraft carrier,” capable of carrying both manned and unmanned aerial combat platforms.

As SCMP reported, the flat-top vessel will serve as a fleet command center enabling drones, helicopters, fighters, and landing craft to approach an adversary’s coast. Its unprecedented size and launch capability position it as a regionally deployable light aircraft carrier that can be deployed to potential flashpoints in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

The ship is designed to transport an entire amphibious combat battalion and can operate as part of carrier strike groups alongside Type 055 destroyers, Type 052 destroyers, and Type 054 frigates, or independently as a flagship for task forces.

Timeline to Commissioning

The Sichuan completed its maiden sea trial in November 2025, testing propulsion and electrical systems. With the electromagnetic catapult and arrestor gear now installed — along with deck markings painted — the vessel is in its final pre-commissioning phase. CCTV News marked the occasion with the phrase: “The future has arrived, quietly awaiting good news!”

While an exact commissioning date has not been officially announced, the installation of these critical systems suggests that the Sichuan will be ready for operational deployment in the near future, further enhancing the PLA Navy’s far seas combat capabilities and multidimensional long-range landing operations.

What to Watch For

As the Sichuan moves toward formal commissioning, observers will be watching for:

  • Fixed-wing aircraft takeoff and landing trials from its electromagnetic catapult
  • Integration exercises with carrier strike groups
  • Drone swarm operational demonstrations
  • The vessel’s deployment to regional waters for training missions

The Type 076 represents a significant advancement in Chinese naval capabilities and a world-first in warship design — one that is likely to reshape amphibious warfare doctrine and regional military balances in the years ahead.
