Eight Wounded in Coney Island July 4 Shooting

At least eight people were shot, four of them children, during Independence Day fireworks celebrations in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood late Saturday night, according to the New York Police Department. A 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest, while the other seven victims are listed in stable condition.

The Incident

Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots at approximately 10:37 p.m. local time on July 4 near the intersection of West 31st Street and Surf Avenue in Coney Island, just steps from the boardwalk where a fireworks display had begun at 9:45 p.m., according to the NYPD statement provided to ABC News. Officers arrived to find eight individuals suffering from gunshot wounds and transported them to local hospitals.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said, but no arrests have been made. Investigators are actively searching for persons of interest.

The Victims

The NYPD confirmed the specific injuries of each victim. Four boys were among the wounded: a 6-year-old shot in the stomach, a 7-year-old shot in both legs, a 12-year-old shot in the leg, and a 14-year-old shot in the thigh. The adult victims include a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest who remains in critical condition, a 25-year-old woman shot in the leg, a 33-year-old man shot in the chest, and a 37-year-old man shot in the shoulder.

“All victims were transported by EMS to local area hospitals where seven people were listed in stable condition,” the NYPD said in a statement. “The 21-year-old woman is listed in critical condition.”

Witness Accounts

A deli worker at the scene told the New York Post that he saw police officers running with children in their arms through surveillance cameras. “When I went out I saw one kid was going into the ambulance and I was told there were four inside,” he said. The worker also noted that police recovered a book bag containing a gun under nearby trees, and suggested there may have been more than one shooter given the number of victims.

Residents expressed frustration and sorrow. “It’s so sad they won’t enjoy themselves without them killing each other,” said a local resident named Mackenzie. “This building is always partying. I came home to have fun and now this.” Another neighbor told the Post, “It’s nothing new over here honestly,” reflecting a grim familiarity with violence in the area.

Context and Significance

The shooting occurred on the 250th anniversary of American independence, a milestone marked by nationwide celebrations. In New York, the Macy’s fireworks display over the East River and Brooklyn Bridge drew massive crowds, while the Brooklyn Bridge itself caught fire during the evening’s festivities in a separate incident.

The Coney Island shooting adds to a troubling pattern of gun violence during holiday celebrations in the United States, echoing previous tragedies such as the 2022 Highland Park, Illinois parade shooting and numerous July 4th weekend incidents in cities across the country. While New York maintains some of the strictest gun laws in the country, shootings continue to occur, particularly in certain neighborhoods. The involvement of child victims — four boys ranging from 6 to 14 years old — amplifies the tragedy and may renew calls for enhanced security measures at large public gatherings.

According to CBS News, police received a 911 call reporting multiple people shot at 2929 West 31st Street, and officers arrived to find eight individuals with gunshot wounds who were then transported to multiple hospitals in the area. The NYPD has not yet identified any suspects or persons of interest.

Investigation and Outlook

The NYPD investigation remains in its early stages. Key unanswered questions include the number of shooters involved, the motive behind the attack, and whether the shooting was targeted or random. The recovery of a firearm at the scene provides a potential lead, but no suspects have been publicly identified.

As the community grapples with the aftermath, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenge of gun violence in America, even during moments of national celebration. The condition of the 21-year-old woman in critical care will be closely monitored in the coming days.
