Firebomb Attack Destroys Van and Home in Belgian Border Town
A suspected arson attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning left a van completely destroyed and a home severely damaged in Riemst, a Belgian municipality near the Dutch border. Four people, including two children, were inside the house at the time but escaped without injury, according to VRT NWS.
Attack and Emergency Response
Emergency services received a report of a fire in the early morning on the Visésteenweg in Zichen-Zussen-Bolder, a subdivision of Riemst in the Limburg province. Witnesses reported seeing a burning projectile thrown under a parked van, followed by a loud explosion.
“We immediately called the fire department,” said Delano, a neighbor who lives across the street. “But the front facade was already on fire. We tried to put it out with a garden hose, but there was still gasoline on the front of the car, so we couldn’t extinguish it.”
Another neighbor, Arlette, described hearing multiple explosions. “First there was a loud bang, but then there were several more,” she said. “The four people living in the house were also very frightened. There were two children among them and the woman was crying.”
Firefighting and Damage
Fire crews from Oupeye and Brandweerzone Oost-Limburg arrived to find the van fully engulfed in flames, with the fire already spreading to the front of the adjacent house. Major Jos Peters, spokesperson for Brandweerzone Oost-Limburg, described the scene. “When our colleagues arrived, the van was already on fire. The flames spread to the front of the house. The rooms facing the street are completely burned out.”
The fire was contained before it could spread to the rear of the building, but the front section sustained severe damage and was declared temporarily uninhabitable. The De Limburger reported that the flames had jumped from the burning van to the slate canopy and the street-facing part of the home.
Asbestos Precautions
During the firefighting operation, crews took extra precautions due to concerns that the roof slates might contain asbestos. Firefighters wore face masks as a safety measure. “That is currently being investigated, but we have taken extra precautions,” Major Peters said. “However, the possible contamination is localized, so there is no danger to the surrounding area.”
The Visésteenweg was partially closed during the operation, with traffic diverted by the Bilzen-Hoeselt-Riemst police zone.
Investigation Underway
The Limburg public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the incident, with initial findings pointing to arson. Anna Degraen, spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, confirmed the nature of the attack as reported by the Belga News Agency.
“An unknown person allegedly threw a burning projectile at the van,” Degraen said. “Because the van was parked close to the house, the fire also spread to the house.”
After the fire was extinguished, the forensic laboratory arrived on site to collect evidence. A fire expert will also conduct an independent investigation based on the lab’s findings. As of the time of reporting, no suspects have been identified or arrested.
Context and Motive
The attack occurred on the Visésteenweg, a major road connecting the region to Visé and Liège, located just meters from the Dutch border near Maastricht. The use of a firebomb with gasoline as an accelerant suggests a targeted attack, though the motive remains unclear.
The Limburg region has seen several arson incidents in recent months. In May 2026, a double arson attack occurred at a former bank building in Riemst, and other firebomb attacks have been reported in nearby towns such as Beringen and Merksem. Investigators have not yet established whether this incident is connected to any broader pattern of criminal activity.
What to Watch For
As the investigation progresses, authorities will be examining forensic evidence from the scene, including potential fingerprints or DNA, and reviewing any available surveillance camera footage from the area. The cross-border proximity to the Netherlands may also factor into the investigation if suspects are believed to have fled across the frontier. The residents, who lost their vehicle and much of their home, are now awaiting answers as the forensic analysis continues.
