Former Belgian Footballer Karel Snoeckx Awakens from Coma After Brutal Traffic Aggression Attack
Karel Snoeckx, the 53-year-old former Belgian professional footballer who was brutally assaulted in a traffic aggression incident on Saturday, is no longer in a coma. The suspect in the case appeared before the council chamber in Turnhout on Tuesday, where a decision on his continued detention is expected. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the suspect is reportedly deeply concerned about the victim’s condition.
The Incident
The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon, July 4, at the intersection of Steenweg op Oosthoven and Hogestraat in Turnhout, in the Antwerp Kempen region. Snoeckx was driving home from the Saturday market with his wife Lindsy, daughter Ymanie (22, 22 weeks pregnant), and son-in-law when their car nearly hit a female pedestrian at a crosswalk. The woman allegedly accused the family of racism.
Snoeckx, described by his family as a peaceful man who “wouldn’t hurt a fly,” exited the vehicle to defuse the situation. A 35-year-old male suspect then intervened and launched a brutal assault, punching Snoeckx in the face, putting him in a chokehold, and stomping on his head four to five times with his shoe.
Harrowing Family Testimony
In emotional testimony to VTM NIEUWS, Snoeckx’s wife Lindsy Leppens and daughter Ymanie described the horrific scene. “The three of us were lying there on the ground and he just kept hitting my father’s face and chest,” Ymanie recounted, as reported by Het Laatste Nieuws.
Lindsy added: “I said: ‘he already has heart problems.’ But he deliberately stomped four to five hard times on my father’s head with his shoe.”
The family performed CPR for 15 minutes before the MUG emergency team arrived and continued resuscitation for another 20 minutes. Snoeckx suffered multiple broken ribs, a broken sternum, and was placed in an induced coma.
Medical Update
As of Tuesday, Snoeckx has woken from his coma, but his condition remains serious. Family lawyer Evelien Van Dooren confirmed that his condition is stable and that he has come through the first 48 hours well. However, he faces a long and difficult rehabilitation, and doctors cannot yet determine whether there is permanent brain damage.
“He has broken numerous ribs, including the sternum, so it will be a heavy recovery,” Van Dooren told HLN. “Whether there is permanent damage, they cannot say at the moment.”
Legal Proceedings
The 35-year-old male suspect, of Albanian origin and a resident of Turnhout for approximately 12 years, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder (poging tot doodslag). According to VRT NWS, he appeared before the council chamber in Turnhout on Tuesday, which will decide on his continued detention.
Defense lawyer Rebecca Greenland stated that her client has a clean criminal record and is normally a very calm man who cares for his father. “He is enormously concerned about his condition,” Greenland said. “This is a very sensitive case and we hope the case can proceed in all serenity.”
A 38-year-old female suspect, the male suspect’s partner, was also arrested but released under conditions. Her charges were reduced from attempted murder to intentional assault and battery.
A Footballing Career Remembered
Karel Snoeckx enjoyed a notable professional football career, winning the Belgian First Division championship with Lierse SK in 1997 and the Belgian Cup with Germinal Beerschot in 2005. He also played for KSC Lokeren, KSK Beveren, and Vålerenga in Norway. As reported by Voetbalkrant, Snoeckx was looking forward to becoming a grandfather for the first time.
Broader Context
This case has become a high-profile example of escalating road rage incidents in Belgium, sparking public debate about safety and punishment. Police are collecting dashcam and surveillance camera footage from the scene to determine the exact sequence of events.
What’s Next
The council chamber’s decision on the suspect’s detention will be announced later today. Meanwhile, Snoeckx’s recovery continues, with his family remaining by his side. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further legal proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.”}
