Bonnie Tyler, ‘Total Eclipse’ Singer, Dies at 75

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose distinctive raspy voice powered some of the 1980s’ most enduring anthems, has died at the age of 75. The artist behind “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero” passed away unexpectedly on July 8 at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, according to VRT NWS.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” read a statement on her official website. “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

A Voice Born from Accident

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath, Wales, Tyler’s path to stardom was shaped by a remarkable twist of fate. In 1977, after surgery to remove nodules from her vocal cords, she was instructed to rest her voice completely. While driving to visit her brother in hospital, she realized she had forgotten strawberries she intended to bring as a gift. In frustration, she screamed — permanently damaging her vocal cords.

Rather than ending her career, the resulting husky, gravelly tone became her signature. “When I went back in the studio, I started singing ‘It’s a Heartache’ and my producers said, ‘My God, your voice is husky now, but we love it,’” she later recalled. The song became her first major international hit.

The Steinman Partnership and Global Stardom

By 1982, Tyler’s career was flagging after a string of flop singles. But after seeing Meat Loaf perform “Bat Out of Hell” on television, she set her sights on working with its writer, Jim Steinman. As BBC News reported, Steinman was initially skeptical until he heard her rock demos. He invited her to New York, played “Total Eclipse of the Heart” at his piano, and offered her the song on the spot.

The theatrical rock ballad became a phenomenon, selling 6 million copies in its first year and topping charts worldwide. It spent four weeks at No. 1 in the United States, making Tyler the first Welsh artist to achieve that feat. The song surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify earlier in 2026.

Steinman also wrote “Holding Out for a Hero” (1984), featured on the “Footloose” soundtrack, which enjoyed a second revival when it appeared in “Shrek 2” (2004). Tyler earned three Grammy nominations over her career and was appointed MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2023 for services to music.

Eurovision and Final Years

In 2013, at age 62, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, with “Believe in Me,” finishing 19th. She released her 18th and final studio album, “The Best Is Yet to Come,” in 2021, and published her autobiography “Straight From the Heart” in 2023.

Her final concert took place at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on March 19, 2026. According to Variety, she had been hospitalized in early May for emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, Portugal, and was placed in an induced coma. Though she emerged from the coma in June, her condition remained serious.

Tributes Pour In

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer led tributes, calling Tyler “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists” whose catalogue of music “continues to touch lives, flood dance floors and fill karaoke booths.” Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said Wales had “lost a true icon.”

Fellow pop star Sir Cliff Richard described her as having an “infectious zest for life,” while record producer Pete Waterman declared she was “equal to Tina Turner” in vocal ability. Carol Vorderman, the Welsh broadcaster, noted that Tyler was “regarded as a legend — particularly amongst women” in Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Tyler is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert Sullivan. Despite the immense success of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” she famously earned little from its billion streams, as publishing royalties went to Steinman’s estate and her 1980s-era contract paid minimal digital streaming revenue.

From a council estate in South Wales to global superstardom, from a vocal cord mishap to one of the most recognizable voices in pop history, Bonnie Tyler’s story is one of resilience, talent, and an unmistakable sound that will echo through generations. As her final album title declared, she always believed the best was yet to come — and her music ensures her voice will endure.
