Zhangxue Motorcycle to Build 500,000-Unit R&D Base in Chongqing

Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Zhangxue Motorcycle has signed a cooperation agreement with Zhongji Zhonglian Engineering Co., Ltd. to design a motorcycle R&D and production base in Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area with an annual production capacity of 500,000 units, marking a major expansion for the fast-growing brand.

The agreement, signed on July 8, 2026, comes just months after Zhangxue Motorcycle achieved a historic victory at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in March 2026, becoming the first Chinese motorcycle brand to win in the elite WorldSSP category. According to The Paper, the victory dramatically boosted the company’s brand recognition and triggered an explosion in orders.

From WSBK Victory to Production Surge

Zhangxue Motorcycle’s WSBK triumph in Portugal saw French rider Valentin Debise pilot the 820RR-RS to victory with a commanding nearly 4-second lead, breaking decades of dominance by established European and Japanese manufacturers. The win served as a powerful validation of the company’s engineering capabilities.

The impact on demand was immediate. Overseas orders in April 2026 alone matched the company’s entire previous year’s volume. By June 2026, monthly production had already exceeded 10,000 units, straining the company’s existing factory, which has a design capacity of just 20,000 units per year.

As reported by China News Service, the new base will be designed to handle “scaled mass production, intelligent manufacturing, and high-end brand display,” with production processes adaptable to product upgrades over the next decade.

Strategic Location in Chongqing

The choice of Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area is no coincidence. Zhang Xue, founder of Zhangxue Motorcycle, explained in an interview with Guancha.cn that “Chongqing has the richest supporting resources for motorcycles, especially high-performance heavy machines, and there are plenty of industry talents. 80-90% of Zhangxue Motorcycle’s engineers and middle-to-senior management come from Chongqing.”

Chongqing has a 47-year history of motorcycle manufacturing, dating back to the Jialing CJ50, and is home to a complete industrial chain for high-performance motorcycles. The city’s motorcycle industry has been undergoing a transformation from low-cost manufacturing to high-end, intelligent production.

The Design Partner

Zhongji Zhonglian Engineering Co., Ltd., the design partner for the project, is a state-owned engineering company under China National Machinery Industry Corporation (Sinomach), a Fortune Global 500 enterprise. Founded in 1964 as the Third Design and Research Institute of the Ministry of Machinery Industry, the company brings extensive experience in automotive and motorcycle intelligent manufacturing park design.

Zhao Yongbo, Chairman of Zhongji Zhonglian, stated that the company will “form an expert team for this project to create an industry-leading modern motorcycle intelligent manufacturing park, helping Chongqing’s motorcycle industry cluster develop towards higher-end and more integrated production.”

Land Acquisition and Rapid Execution

The company has been moving quickly to secure the necessary infrastructure. On June 4, 2026, Zhangxue Motorcycle purchased a 64,640 square meter (approximately 97 mu) plot in Liangjiang New Area for 48.48 million yuan (CNY), designated for motorcycle manufacturing. The Chongqing Daily reported that the signing ceremony took place on July 8, just over a month after the land purchase.

The Founder’s Story

Zhang Xue’s journey is a remarkable Chinese entrepreneurial success story. Born in 1987 in a rural village in Hunan Province, he left school after junior high and began working as a motorcycle repair apprentice at age 14. After co-founding Kaiyue Motorcycle in 2017, he left in March 2024 and founded Zhangxue Motorcycle — a brand named after himself — in April 2024. The company received 90 million yuan in investment from Zhejiang Venture Capital in early 2026, with a pre-investment valuation of 1 billion yuan.

Analysis and Outlook

The jump from 20,000 units per year current capacity to 500,000 units represents a 25-fold expansion — an extraordinary scaling challenge that will require significant capital, workforce expansion, and supply chain development. The company’s 10,000+ pre-orders within 10 days of launching pre-sales in March 2026 suggests genuine market demand, though a temporary production halt of the 820RR model in May 2026 indicates potential quality control teething issues.

Zhangxue Motorcycle’s expansion represents a broader trend in Chinese manufacturing: a move from OEM and low-cost production toward brand-building, R&D investment, and global competition. The company’s success challenges established Japanese and European brands in the mid-to-large displacement motorcycle segment, signaling that Chinese manufacturers are increasingly capable of competing on engineering and performance, not just price.
