Shenzhen Airport Hits 1 Million Foreign Passengers in 2026

Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport has recorded over 1 million foreign passenger arrivals and departures in 2026, reaching the milestone 71 days earlier than last year and underscoring the accelerating recovery of international travel to China. As of July 12, the airport had processed 1,022,000 foreign passenger entries and exits, a year-on-year increase of 32.5%, according to the Shenzhen Government.

Context: A Nationwide Travel Surge

The milestone at Shenzhen Airport is part of a broader national trend. China handled 369 million cross-border trips in the first half of 2026, up 10.8% year-on-year and setting a new record, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA). Foreigner cross-border trips totaled 45.91 million, up 20.6%, as reported by China Daily.

More than 17.81 million foreign visitors entered China visa-free in H1 2026, accounting for 77.7% of all foreign arrivals and marking a 30.6% year-on-year increase. China currently grants unilateral visa-free entry to citizens of 50 countries and offers 240-hour visa-free transit to travelers from 55 countries.

Visa-Free Policy Drives Shenzhen’s Growth

Shenzhen has outperformed the national average in attracting visa-free travelers. In the first half of 2026, over 300,000 foreign passengers entered through Shenzhen Airport visa-free, a 43.9% year-on-year increase — 13.3 percentage points higher than the national average. The top source countries for visa-free passengers at Shenzhen are Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore.

“With the continuous expansion and implementation of the country’s unilateral visa-free and transit visa-free policies, the number of foreigners entering China has grown rapidly from January to June,” said Lin Yongsheng, spokesperson for the NIA, as quoted by China Daily.

Route Expansion and Infrastructure

Shenzhen’s aggressive expansion of its international route network has been a key factor in attracting more foreign travelers. In 2026, the airport added new routes to Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Kathmandu (Nepal), and increased frequencies on popular routes to Vientiane (Laos), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Bangkok (Thailand). The airport now serves nearly 40 countries and regions, with 63 international destinations and approximately 800 international passenger flights per week.

Overall passenger traffic at Shenzhen Airport is also climbing. As of July 4, the airport’s border inspection had processed over 3.5 million entry-exit passenger trips, up 6.7% year-on-year, ranking fourth among all Chinese air ports. The Xinhua News Agency reported that in Q1 2026 alone, Shenzhen Airport processed over 1.754 million total entry-exit passengers, with visa-free entries surging over 60%.

Looking ahead, two new terminals (T1 and T2) are scheduled to open in 2027, designed to handle 12 million domestic and 3 million international passengers annually. Meanwhile, the South China Morning Post reported in July 2026 that China’s aviation regulator is considering easing requirements for intercontinental flights, a move that could further boost Shenzhen’s long-haul route network.

Analysis: Why Shenzhen Is Outpacing Peers

The surge in foreign passenger traffic at Shenzhen Airport can be attributed to several interconnected factors. Visa liberalization remains the single most important driver, but Shenzhen’s status as China’s “Silicon Valley” also plays a crucial role. The city attracts business travelers interested in technology and innovation — a draw reflected in traveler accounts of visiting Shenzhen specifically to see high-tech equipment.

Improvements in departure tax refunds, electronic payments, and other convenience measures have also made travel to China more accessible for foreign visitors. The 71-day acceleration in reaching the 1 million milestone compared to 2025 suggests that these policy changes and infrastructure investments are having a compounding effect.

What’s Next

The milestone signals Shenzhen’s growing role as an international aviation hub, competing with Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. With new terminals on the horizon and potential regulatory easing for intercontinental flights, Shenzhen is well-positioned to continue its rapid growth in foreign passenger traffic. The broader national trend — driven by China’s expanding visa-free policies and the viral “China Travel” phenomenon on overseas social media — suggests that inbound tourism will remain a key driver of economic activity in the Pearl River Delta region for the foreseeable future.
