Table Tennis Doubles Open; Argentina Reaches World Cup Final

Two major sporting stories dominated headlines on July 16: the opening of the 2026 National Table Tennis Doubles Championships in Changsha, China, and Argentina’s thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over England in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, setting up a final clash with Spain.

Table Tennis Doubles Championships Mark Historic First

The 2026 National Table Tennis Championships (Doubles) officially opened in Changsha, Hunan Province, running from July 13 to 19 at the Central South University Gymnasium. For the first time, the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) has separated the doubles events into a standalone championship, a strategic move driven by the addition of doubles events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and preparation for the upcoming Asian Games, according to People’s Daily.

A landmark innovation this year allows players to form pairs across provincial teams for the first time, breaking with the traditional provincial-team structure that has long defined Chinese table tennis. The championships feature 122 mixed doubles pairs, 94 men’s doubles pairs, and 90 women’s doubles pairs, with nearly 400 athletes from 68 teams across 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions.

Star Pairings Draw Attention

Several high-profile partnerships have captured fans’ attention. In mixed doubles, Olympic champions Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha have teamed up, while Lin Shidong partners with Kuai Man. The men’s doubles draw features a highly anticipated reunion of Ma Long and Xu Xin, who last won the national doubles championship together in 2020. Lin Shidong and Wen Ruibo, as well as Huang Youzheng and Xiang Peng, are also competing. In women’s doubles, Chen Yi and Fan Shuhan are making their debut as a pair ahead of the Asian Games, as China News Service reported.

The preliminaries ran from July 13 to 15, with the main draw beginning on July 16. The team and singles events will be held separately from December 16 to 23 in Fuzhou, Fujian Province.

Argentina Stages Dramatic World Cup Comeback

In international football, Argentina secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the World Cup semifinal played on July 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, as reported by Xinhua News. The defending champions trailed for much of the match before mounting a stunning late comeback.

England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, who scored from close range. England then retreated into a defensive posture, allowing Argentina to dominate possession and apply sustained pressure. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made several crucial saves to preserve the lead.

Messi Masterclass Seals Victory

The breakthrough came in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández equalized with a powerful long-range shot, assisted by Lionel Messi. Deep into stoppage time, with the match seemingly headed for extra time, Messi delivered another pinpoint assist, and substitute Lautaro Martínez scored the winning header in the 90+2 minute.

“I dreamed about that goal, I swear,” Martínez said after the match. “Enzo also scored a wonderful goal. It can be said that the Argentine team has always shown extraordinary strength.” He added that England’s decision to drop deeper after taking the lead gave Argentina more composure on the ball.

Argentina has now scored 19 goals in this World Cup, the most of any team, and has won all six World Cup semifinals it has participated in. Messi set a new record for most assists in World Cup history with 12 total. This marks Argentina’s second consecutive World Cup final appearance.

Final Showdown: Argentina vs. Spain

Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York. Spain reached the final by defeating France 2-0 in the other semifinal, returning to the championship match for the first time since winning the tournament in 2010. The final pits the reigning Copa América champions against the reigning European champions in a clash of contrasting footballing philosophies.

What to Watch For

In table tennis, all eyes will be on the Ma Long-Xu Xin reunion and whether the new cross-province pairing rule reshapes competitive dynamics ahead of the LA 2028 Olympics. The championship finals are scheduled for July 19. In football, the world awaits a final that could see Argentina claim back-to-back World Cup titles for the first time since Brazil in 1958 and 1962, while Spain seeks to reclaim the glory of its 2010 triumph.
