Belgium Hits 50 Fire Deaths in 2026 as Experts Warn of Faster Summer Blazes
Belgium has recorded 50 fire-related deaths so far in 2026, a grim milestone that nearly matches the 52 fatalities recorded for the entirety of 2025. Of these, 40 deaths occurred in residential fires and 10 in workplace incidents, according to data compiled by fire safety advisor Tim Renders and reported by Het Laatste Nieuws. Experts warn that summer conditions are making house fires develop faster and more dangerously.
A Deadly Year in the Making
The year began tragically with January 2026 becoming the deadliest January for residential fires since record-keeping began in 2014, claiming 13 lives — 11 of whom were seniors. Since then, major incidents have continued to mount: four people died in a warehouse fire in Anderlecht in early June, five were killed and 16 injured in an apartment building fire on Linkeroever in Antwerp in early July, and most recently, six workers lost their lives in the Oxy-gebouw fire in Brussels during the week of July 13.
Tim Renders, a fire safety advisor who has independently tracked fire fatalities in Belgium since 2014, described the situation as alarming. “We’re now at an average where someone dies from a house fire every five days in Belgium,” Renders told HLN. “I find that a dramatic figure. Compare us to the Netherlands and we’re doing three times worse.”
Professor Bart Merci, head of the Combustion, Fire and Fire Safety Research Unit at Ghent University (UGent), cautioned against drawing conclusions from a single year’s data but acknowledged that risks are broadly increasing. “We can’t ignore that risks are generally increasing,” Merci said. “A consequence of the electrification of our society.”
Why Summer Fires Are More Dangerous
Higher ambient temperatures and drier conditions during summer months cause fires to develop significantly faster than in winter, experts warn. Renders explained that a fire starting in any room will now develop much more quickly because indoor spaces are already warmer. The widespread use of fans and additional electrical appliances further increases risk.
Professor Merci pointed to another factor: modern insulation. “We insulate better than before,” he told VRT NWS. “With single glazing, the glass would break out in a fire. Now it stays in place and you get many more so-called ventilation-controlled fires.” This means fires behave differently, with oxygen availability rather than building materials determining how the fire evolves.
The Hidden Danger: Smoke, Not Flames
Both experts emphasized that flames are rarely the direct cause of death in house fires. “Very rarely from the flames themselves,” Renders said. “People die from smoke intoxication: the smoke is toxic, displaces oxygen, and that’s how we die.”
Merci elaborated: “People underestimate that, but it often goes very fast. Anyone who inhales smoke is in danger very quickly — airway irritation, but you can also quickly lose consciousness if toxic fumes are present. And then you’re lost.”
Electrification and New Risks
The increasing electrification of Belgian homes is introducing new fire hazards. Devices with high-power batteries — e-bikes, e-scooters, solar panels, and electric vehicles — can explode or ignite while charging. Renders warned against a common but dangerous practice: “Don’t place an e-bike or battery in your escape route. In a house, that’s the hallway by the front door — exactly where those bikes usually stand.”
Regulatory Gaps and Regional Disparities
Belgium’s fragmented approach to fire safety regulation has drawn sharp criticism from experts. Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels each have different smoke detector requirements for private homes. “I find the smoke detector legislation in Flanders absurd,” Renders said. “A fire doesn’t behave differently in Flanders than in Wallonia.”
According to the Flemish government, at least one smoke detector per floor is required in all homes. However, unlike mandatory car inspections or boiler servicing, no authority systematically checks whether homes have functioning smoke detectors. The fire service lacks the personnel and funding for such inspections.
Wallonia, with roughly half the population of Flanders, consistently records more fire deaths. Hainaut is the most fire-dangerous province, followed by Liège. Possible factors include longer fire brigade response times and higher poverty levels affecting fire safety.
What Can Be Done
When asked to name the single most important measure, both experts were unequivocal. “Enough smoke detectors. That doesn’t cost much,” Renders said. “Eliminating all fire risks isn’t possible, but at least make sure you’re warned.”
Merci agreed: “Smoke detectors, that’s beyond dispute. And we need engineers who take this seriously. Because fire isn’t just something that happens to you — it’s something you can largely keep under control.”
Looking Ahead
With summer in full swing and the year only half over, experts fear the death toll will continue to rise. The worst years on record — 2016, 2020, and 2022 — each saw 76 to 78 fire deaths. “I fear so,” Renders said when asked whether 2026 could match those disaster years. “People think fire is something that won’t happen to them.”
As the NRC reported, the recent Oxy-gebouw tragedy in Brussels — where six workers died when an elevator plunged after a fire broke out during renovation — underscores the dangers extend beyond residential settings. With climate change bringing hotter, drier summers and electrification accelerating, the question facing Belgian policymakers is whether the current regulatory framework is adequate to protect its citizens.
