Canadian Wildfire Smoke Blankets Northern U.S. as Nearly 900 Fires Burn

Dangerous wildfire smoke from hundreds of blazes raging across Canada has blanketed large portions of the northern United States, triggering air quality alerts from Minnesota to the Northeast and prompting health warnings for millions of residents. Nearly 900 active wildfires were burning across Canada as of July 18, with more than 180 in Ontario alone, according to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System.

A Crisis Without Borders

The smoke, originating primarily from wildfires in northwestern Ontario and northeastern Minnesota, has been funneled southward by a heat dome responsible for record temperatures across the northern U.S. Cold fronts behind the heat dome have tapped into smoke plumes from fires in western Ontario, northeast Minnesota, and northern Canada, sending hazardous air deep into American territory.

Air quality alerts remain in effect across a vast stretch of the country, from Minnesota through the Great Lakes region and into the Northeast, reaching as far south as northern Virginia. Code purple “very unhealthy” air quality has been reported in major cities including Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C., according to Weather.com.

Toronto ranked worst in the world for air quality on July 15, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company. New York City ranked fifth globally. “You have a firehose of smoke coming right now,” said Derek Mallia, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Utah, as reported by NPR.

Unprecedented Fire Season

Canada has experienced more than 3,600 wildfires so far in 2026, torching over 6.6 million acres — approximately 2.7 million hectares. The 2026 season follows two of Canada’s most destructive fire seasons on record in 2023 and 2025, with the last three fire seasons ranking among the 10 worst ever recorded.

In northern Ontario alone, 185 active wildland fires were burning as of July 15 — 148 in the northwest region and 37 in the northeast region. Of those, 69 in the northwest were out of control, according to CP24. Thousands of people in First Nations communities in northwestern Ontario have been forced to evacuate.

“What is unfolding is what climate and forest scientists have been predicting for 30 years,” Werner Kurz, a retired senior research scientist at Natural Resources Canada, told Ars Technica. “As the world gets hotter and drier, we are exposing forests to more and more risk, and the old strategies of fire suppression are simply being overwhelmed.”

Government Response on Both Sides of the Border

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency on July 12, issuing Executive Order 26-08 that mobilized the Minnesota National Guard to assist with wildfire response in northern Minnesota, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, as reported by WDIO.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated the province had 156 fire crews and nearly 150 water bombers and helicopters working to extinguish the fires, with assistance from Alberta and Yukon. “Our government will not spare a penny to keep people safe,” Ford said.

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra emphasized the transboundary nature of the crisis. “This challenge knows no borders. The United States will continue to coordinate closely with Canada, just as we have for more than four decades of shared wildfire emergencies,” he said.

However, the Ontario Liberal Party criticized the Ford government for budgeting only $150 million for wildfire fighting in 2026, down from $271 million spent in 2025.

The Double Whammy: Heat and Smoke

The combination of extreme heat and wildfire smoke has created a particularly dangerous public health crisis. “Extreme heat and wildfire smoke each carry major risks, especially for people with chronic health conditions including heart disease. The combination of the two is extremely dangerous,” said Manesh R. Patel, M.D., volunteer president of the American Heart Association, in a statement from the American Heart Association Newsroom.

Dr. Jeffrey Siegel, a professor at the University of Toronto, described the situation as a “double whammy” and warned that these conditions represent “something like the new normal.”

Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that enters the lungs and bloodstream. A study in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that heavy smoke raised the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests by up to 70%, while research in Circulation found the risk of fatal heart attacks nearly doubled during extreme heat and high fine particle pollution days.

New Technology on the Horizon

Amid the crisis, there is a glimmer of technological progress. The first three operational satellites of the Google-backed FireSat constellation launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on July 7, 2026. Designed by California-based Muon Space, these satellites can detect wildfires as small as 5 by 5 meters through smoke and clouds — a capability that could revolutionize early wildfire detection.

The Earth Fire Alliance projects that even an hourly revisit rate by the FireSat constellation could help save more than $1 billion in fire damage costs and prevent nearly 22 million tons of carbon emissions annually.

What’s Next

Smoke conditions are expected to persist through the weekend of July 18-19, with forecasts suggesting a third round of smoke may reach the southern United States — potentially as far as Florida — in the week ahead. Showers and thunderstorms may temporarily clear air in some areas, but the broader trend points to a future where such events become more frequent.

“The frequency and intensity of these wildfire smoke events are increasing,” said Dan Westervelt, an associate research professor at Columbia University. “These fires are becoming an annual occurrence and sometimes more than just annual.”

As millions of residents across North America continue to breathe hazardous air, the message from health officials is clear: check air quality monitors, limit outdoor activity, and prepare for a new reality where wildfire smoke is no longer a seasonal anomaly but a recurring public health threat.
