China’s C919 to Launch First International Route Aug 12
China’s domestically developed C919 large passenger aircraft will operate its first regularly scheduled international commercial route starting August 12, as Air China deploys the homegrown jet on the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route, according to Xinhua News. The milestone marks a significant step forward for China’s aerospace industry as it seeks to challenge the Boeing-Airbus duopoly in the global commercial aviation market.
The route will operate one round-trip flight daily between Beijing Capital International Airport and Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The outbound flight, designated CA723, departs Beijing at 15:00 local time and arrives in Ulaanbaatar at 17:15 local time. The return flight, CA724, leaves Ulaanbaatar at 18:30 and lands in Beijing at 20:35. Tickets are already available for purchase through Air China’s app and other sales channels.
A Strategic First Destination
The choice of Ulaanbaatar as the C919’s first international destination is strategically calculated. The Beijing-Ulaanbaatar distance of approximately 1,200 kilometers is well within the aircraft’s standard range of 4,075 kilometers, making it a low-risk entry point for international operations. Air China already operates the COMAC C909—another Chinese-made aircraft—on the Hohhot-Ulaanbaatar route since July 2025, providing operational familiarity with Mongolian aviation infrastructure, as reported by IT之家.
The Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route itself has a long history, first opening in 1958 before being suspended and later resuming on August 6, 1991. It is currently served by both Air China and Mongolian Airlines.
Rapid Fleet Expansion
Air China received its 12th C919 aircraft (registration B-659U) on July 8, 2026, marking a rapid expansion from its first C919 delivery in August 2024. In approximately 18 months, the carrier has grown from single-aircraft testing to a fleet of 12, according to IT之家. The airline already operates C919s on routes connecting Beijing with Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Changsha, Xiamen, and Harbin, as well as a daily regional service to Hong Kong that began in November 2025.
Dimsum Daily reported that this first international service marks a significant milestone for the aircraft’s expansion beyond the mainland Chinese market.
A Decades-Long Ambition
The C919 program represents China’s decades-long ambition to develop a domestically produced large passenger aircraft capable of competing with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo. The large aircraft project was formally approved by China’s State Council in 2007, and COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) was established in 2008 to lead development, according to Wikipedia.
The aircraft made its maiden flight in May 2017, received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China in September 2022, and entered commercial service in May 2023. As of April 2026, 35 C919 aircraft had been manufactured, operating over 42,000 commercial passenger flights and carrying more than 4 million passengers cumulatively by the end of 2025.
Certification and International Expansion Challenges
While the C919 has achieved domestic certification, it has not yet received certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) or the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). EASA conducted validation flights in Shanghai in early 2026, and the process is reportedly in its third stage of intensive ground checks and flight tests. However, EASA’s director stated in April 2025 that full certification would take an estimated three to six more years.
Without Western certification, C919 international operations are currently limited to countries that accept Chinese CAAC certification—primarily nations with strong diplomatic ties to China. This makes Mongolia, a key Belt and Road Initiative partner, a natural first choice.
What This Means for Global Aviation
The C919’s entry into international service represents more than a symbolic achievement. Successful operation of the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route could pave the way for service to other Asian destinations, including Southeast Asian capitals and Central Asian cities. The experience gained in international operations—including customs procedures, ground handling abroad, and cross-border documentation—will be invaluable for future route expansion.
However, significant hurdles remain. The C919 still relies heavily on international suppliers for key components, including CFM International LEAP-1C engines, Honeywell avionics, and Collins Aerospace flight control systems. China is developing domestic alternatives, including the CJ-1000A engine, but these are not expected to enter service until 2027–2030 at the earliest.
COMAC also faces the challenge of building a global maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) network to support expanded international operations, and production ramp-up targets of 150 aircraft per year by 2027 have faced delays.
Looking Ahead
The August 12 launch of the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route marks the beginning of the C919’s journey as an international aircraft. While the road ahead involves certification hurdles, supply chain dependencies, and production challenges, the milestone represents a tangible step toward China’s goal of becoming a major player in global commercial aviation. The question now is not whether the C919 can fly internationally, but how far and how fast it can go.
