China’s High-Tech Manufacturing Booms with Quantum Tech

China’s high-tech manufacturing sector is firing on all cylinders in 2026, posting double-digit growth, a landmark scientific breakthrough in quantum memory technology, and record-breaking foreign trade figures that underscore the country’s deepening technological transformation.

According to Xinhua News, the value-added output of high-tech manufacturing grew 13.3% year-on-year in the first half of 2026 — 7.9 percentage points faster than overall industrial output. In the second quarter alone, growth accelerated to 14%, up 1.5 percentage points from Q1. The sector, which accounts for roughly 20% of industrial value-added, contributed nearly half of all industrial growth, according to Wang Guanhua of the National Bureau of Statistics.

A Wave of Innovation Across Industries

The surge spans multiple fronts. Industrial robot production rose 28% year-on-year, 3D printing equipment output jumped 48.5%, and integrated circuit production reached 279.8 billion units in H1 — over 1.5 billion chips per day. New energy vehicle retail penetration has exceeded 60% for three consecutive months, while lithium battery production grew 39.3%.

Major innovation milestones include the accelerating mass production of the C919 large passenger aircraft, the successful completion of all sea trials for China’s second domestic large cruise ship, the “Ada Huacheng,” and the world’s first mass production of T1200-grade ultra-high strength carbon fiber by Zhongfu Shenying. Huawei has proposed “Tao’s Law” and successfully designed and mass-produced 381 chip models, while 38 “Global First” innovative drugs have been approved.

Profits in high-tech manufacturing rose 44.7% year-on-year in the January-May period, contributing 8.0 percentage points to total industrial profit growth. Investment in high-tech industries grew 4.6% in H1, with integrated circuit manufacturing investment up 8.8% and electronic materials investment up 10%.

“High-tech manufacturing shows a virtuous cycle of production, market, benefits, and investment mutually reinforcing,” said Ji Fuxing, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as reported by Xinhua.

Quantum Flash Memory: Reaching the Theoretical Limit

In a breakthrough published in Science on July 17, a research team from Fudan University led by Professor Zhou Peng and Associate Professor Liu Chunsen announced the invention of “Quantum Flash” technology — achieving single-electron non-volatile storage at room temperature for the first time.

As People’s Daily reported, the team successfully observed single-electron non-volatile storage behavior at 27°C, a phenomenon previously considered impossible outside extreme低温 conditions. The device achieves a 0.5V storage window with just a single electron injection — compared to just 55mV in a 1997 Science paper that lasted only five seconds — reaching the theoretical limit of “one electron, one bit.”

The team also proposed a novel “density-of-states scissors” theory, establishing a new theoretical framework for quantum storage. This builds on their earlier achievements: the “PoX” (Dawn) device published in Nature in April 2025 — the world’s fastest non-volatile storage at 400 picoseconds — and the “CY-01” hybrid architecture chip selected as one of China’s Top 10 Scientific Advances for 2025.

According to 21st Century Business Herald, the technology offers a “storage as computing” paradigm that could fundamentally reshape AI chip architecture by eliminating the data movement bottleneck. The team plans to commercialize the technology within one to three years, forming a company and partnering with AI clients.

Foreign Trade Hits Record Highs

China’s foreign trade reached unprecedented levels in the first half of 2026, with total imports and exports exceeding 25 trillion yuan for the first time in any half-year period, as reported by Securities Times. Exports surpassed 13 trillion yuan, up 7.2% year-on-year, while imports exceeded 10.74 trillion yuan, growing 22.1%.

AI computing power hardware emerged as the strongest growth engine, with trade reaching 5.13 trillion yuan, up 56.6% year-on-year. Mechanical and electrical product exports totaled 9.36 trillion yuan, up 20.1%, accounting for 63.5% of total exports. Gao Shiwang, spokesperson for the China Chamber of Commerce for Machinery and Electronics, noted that AI-related products contributed nearly 60% of mechanical and electrical export growth.

Regionally, CCTV News reported that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yellow River Basin, and Northeast China all posted record H1 trade figures. The Greater Bay Area’s nine mainland cities recorded 5.3 trillion yuan in trade, up 20.9%, with June alone breaking 1 trillion yuan.

Outlook

The convergence of strong manufacturing data, a fundamental scientific breakthrough, and robust trade performance paints a picture of an economy in the midst of a profound structural transformation. The quantum flash memory breakthrough, if successfully commercialized, could give China a strategic advantage in next-generation AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, the IMF has raised its 2026 growth forecast for China by 0.2 percentage points even as it lowered the global outlook, reflecting confidence in the resilience of China’s industrial ecosystem.

As Ji Fuxing told Xinhua: “China’s high-tech manufacturing has solid foundations, significant advantages, and broad prospects, fully capable of achieving higher-quality development while responding to challenges.”
