Ekeren Fire Destroys Three Warehouses, Robot Brutus Deployed
A large fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday at a business park in Ekeren, a district of Antwerp, destroying three industrial units and forcing the evacuation of 14 nearby residents. No injuries were reported, according to VRT NWS.
The fire, which started shortly after midnight at the Leugenberg on-ramp area, quickly engulfed three large warehouses housing a glass trading company, a parquet flooring business, and a storage facility. Thick smoke from the blaze prompted the precautionary evacuation of neighboring residents.
Massive Firefighting Response
The Antwerp Fire Zone (Brandweer Zone Antwerpen) dispatched 15 fire crews to the scene, with additional support from Zone Rand. Fire department spokesperson Ninke Neyrinck confirmed that the situation was brought under control by approximately 3:00 a.m., though extensive post-extinguishing work continued for hours.
“A lot of smoke was released from the fire. 14 residents therefore had to leave their homes for a while as a precaution. Now the situation is under control,” Neyrinck told VRT NWS. “But we will still have many hours of work to extinguish everything completely. They are three very large warehouses with a lot of material inside.”
Historic First Deployment of Robot Brutus
The fire marked a significant milestone for the Antwerp Fire Zone: the first operational deployment of “Brutus,” a remotely controlled firefighting robot designed to enter structures too dangerous for human firefighters.
“We had 15 crews on site and our firefighting robot also had to be deployed for the first time,” Neyrinck explained. “The warehouses were quite unstable, so it was safer to send the firefighting robot in first.”
Just weeks earlier, on June 22, the Antwerp Fire Zone had publicly demonstrated its new fleet of drones and robots, including Brutus and a robotic dog named Silvius, as reported by VRT NWS. Brutus is equipped with water cannons and can be operated remotely, making it ideal for hazardous environments where structural collapse is a risk.
Initial Confusion Over Contents
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, there was initial confusion about what was stored in the warehouses. Early reports suggested a garage, but after firefighters cut open a gate, it became clear the site housed a glass trading company. Further investigation revealed three separate business units.
Journalist Patrick Lefelon of HLN reported that both police and fire services set up command posts at the scene. Traffic on the Leugenberg was fully diverted, and the highway exit remained closed for a period.
Cause Under Investigation
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. The full extent of the financial damage has not yet been quantified, though the fire department described the damage as extensive. The identities of the affected businesses have not been publicly named beyond their trade types.
Local resident Niki Deschepper, commenting on HLN, described an “awful stench, as if someone was burning plastic or bakelite” emanating from the fire site.
Context of Recent Fire Concerns
The fire comes just 19 days after a tragic apartment fire on Linkeroever in Antwerp on July 1, which claimed five lives. That incident has heightened public awareness of fire safety across the region. While the Ekeren fire caused no casualties, the complete destruction of three business units represents a significant economic blow to the companies involved.
