Police Recover Stolen Belongings After Ieper Bike Accident

Belgian police have recovered the bicycle and personal belongings of a 62-year-old woman from Ieper who was robbed while receiving emergency treatment after a serious cycling accident. The items were returned to their owner within a day of the theft.

Mieke Carrein was injured on Saturday afternoon, July 18, when she fell on the Grote Markt in Ieper while trying to mount her bicycle. According to VRT NWS, she tripped over a cable laid for market stallholders. The brake lever of her bicycle pierced her right arm, nearly going through to the other side.

“It was a stupid accident at 2 km per hour,” Carrein told VRT NWS.

Rescue and Theft

Bystanders quickly came to her aid, calling an ambulance and locating her husband at the Saturday market. A local hospitality business owner brought pillows to support her while she waited. The fire brigade had to cut the brake lever from the handlebars before she could be transported by ambulance to Jan Yperman Hospital.

But the ordeal did not end there. While Carrein was being treated at the emergency department, someone stole her husband’s electric bicycle from outside the emergency entrance. The bike bag contained Carrein’s handbag, mobile phone, glasses, and Saturday market groceries.

“Who does something like that? Right at the door of an emergency department?” Carrein said. “That’s really low, even though I hadn’t locked my bike, due to the rush and emotion of the moment.”

Swift Police Investigation

Police reviewed CCTV footage and identified a suspect captured on camera at the emergency department entrance. During a house search on Sunday, July 19, officers recovered the stolen bicycle and most of the belongings.

“My husband’s bicycle, with my handbag, mobile phone, glasses and even groceries in the bike bag, have been found,” Carrein told VRT NWS in a follow-up report.

While most items were recovered intact, some cash was missing from the wallet and the perishable groceries had spoiled. However, Carrein expressed relief that essential items such as bank cards, glasses, and her passport were returned.

“Unfortunately the food is ready for the trash,” she said. “As for the money, some is missing from the wallet, but we got the bank cards back, although they are of course blocked. Anyway, it’s a relief that we don’t have to apply for a new passport or buy new glasses.”

Gratitude and Recovery

Carrein praised the police for their swift action. “We are very grateful to the officers for intervening quickly,” she said.

She is now on antibiotics and pain medication, focusing on her recovery. “I have more pain than yesterday, also in other parts of my body,” she noted. “Now that the stolen items are back, I can fully focus on rehabilitation.”

The story highlights a stark contrast between the kindness of strangers and the callousness of the thief. Two young bystanders who helped Carrein after her fall called the ambulance, found her husband on the market, and stayed with her throughout the ordeal. Carrein later made a social media appeal to thank them personally.

“There are still good people in the world,” she said.
