World’s First 41,800-Ton Bidirectional Ship Delivered
China has delivered the world’s first 41,800-ton bidirectional sailing self-discharging bulk carrier, a vessel that sets three world records and marks a significant leap forward for the country’s shipbuilding industry. The ship, named Wontanara, was handed over to global mining giant Rio Tinto on July 21 at the Yangzhou shipbuilding wharf in Jiangsu Province, according to CCTV News.
A New Benchmark in Shipbuilding
Built by CSSC Chengxi Shipyard Co., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) — the world’s largest shipbuilder by output — the vessel represents what the company describes as a critical transition from “following” to “leading” in the high-end self-unloading transshipment vessel sector.
The Wontanara measures 215 meters in length, 42 meters in width, and 14.5 meters in depth, with a design draught of 7.5 meters. Its cargo hold spans approximately 135 meters with a capacity of 29,000 cubic meters. Powered by a full diesel-electric propulsion system, the ship is equipped with two bottom reversible longitudinal conveyor belts that enable single-side or dual-side unloading at a rate of 12,000 tons per hour — the fastest discharge speed among specialized vessels worldwide, as reported by the Global Times.
Three World Records
According to CSSC, the vessel claims three world records:
- World’s largest deadweight shallow-water transshipment self-unloading ship
- World’s fastest self-unloading ship in terms of discharge speed among specialized vessels
- World’s first self-unloading transshipment ship in its tonnage class with bidirectional sailing capability, allowing it to navigate efficiently in both forward and reverse without needing to turn in confined waters
“The first ship’s construction kicked off in May last year, and the 14-month delivery cycle has testified to Chengxi’s robust research and manufacturing strength in this field,” said Zhang Xinlong, General Manager of CSSC Chengxi Shipyard, as quoted by the Global Times.
Supporting the Simandou Iron Ore Project
The Wontanara is the first of five vessels ordered by Rio Tinto. The second and third ships were launched on May 6 and June 30, 2026, respectively, and are expected to be delivered in the first half of 2027. All five vessels will be deployed in the waters off Guinea, West Africa, to serve the Simandou Iron Ore Project.

The Simandou mountain range in Guinea contains one of the world’s largest untapped iron ore deposits, with ore grades of approximately 65% iron content — significantly higher than typical grades. The project is a key economic cooperation initiative between China and Guinea under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China’s Baowu Steel took control of the Simandou iron ore operator in January 2026, and the first shipment of ore to China followed that same month, as noted by China Daily.
At full capacity, Simandou’s two mining hubs are designed to ship up to 120 million metric tons of high-grade iron ore annually. The specialized self-unloading ships will operate in Guinea’s coastal waters, transferring iron ore from mining barges to larger ocean-going vessels — a critical logistical link in the supply chain.
Strategic Implications
The delivery carries significance well beyond a single ship handover. For China’s shipbuilding industry, it demonstrates indigenous R&D capability in a specialized, high-value segment. CSSC Chengxi Shipyard already commands the world’s largest market share in self-unloading vessel construction, and this delivery cements that position.
For global iron ore markets, the Simandou project represents a potential game-changer. The project could diversify global supply away from traditional dominance by Australia and Brazil, potentially reshaping pricing dynamics. China’s integrated control — through Baowu Steel’s ownership of mining operations and these specialized vessels handling maritime logistics — creates a vertically integrated supply chain that strengthens China’s resource security.
